Pinellas County is situated on a peninsula that forms the western shore of Tampa Bay and is bordered to the north by Pasco County, to the east by Hillsborough County and to the south by Tampa Bay. The Sunshine Skyway Bridge, a focal point of the Tampa Bay Area, spans Tampa Bay connecting Pinellas County and Manatee County. Pinellas County enjoys a mild, sub-tropical climate and has some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the world. The climate has very attractive to the 55 and above crowd since the 1920's with the successful marketing campaign of Webb City in the 1920's and still is marketed as a Retirement Haven throughout the country.

1911 brought about the creation of Pinellas County from the westernmost part of Hillsborough County due to the residents disgust with the lack of services available to them. Travel by land from the Pinellas area was long and arduous, necessitating traveling north of Tampa Bay, then east to Oldsmar area and then south into Tampa. At the time this was pretty rough country. The other alternative was by boat or ferry, which was definitely a shorter more direct route. The county seat of Pinellas is Clearwater, but St Petersburg or St Pete as the local population refers to it, is more well known. Pinellas county juts into Tampa bay and forms the northern "jaw" of the mouth of Tampa Bay. When researching genealogy or history please keep in mind that Pinellas is one of Florida's youngest counties having been created not quite 100 years yet and you will need to also research Hillsborough as well.

Pinellas County is well known for its beautiful white sand beaches and gently rolling surf of the Gulf of Mexico as well as many cultural and sporting events. Home to the Salvador Dali Museum, the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team, opera, symphony, art galleries and a series of music concerts of all genres. The world famous Don Cesar resort. There are 24 incorporated cities and towns is Pinellas County and almost as many unincorporated communities and villiages. Pinellas county saw the birth of commercial air travel with the first commercial flight being a mail drop from Jannus Landing to Tampa and with that flight a whole new world opened up to us.
