How to Find a Wife's Maiden Name
David Dearborn, a librarian and researcher at the New England historic Genealogical Society was the lecturer on a video tape on various ways to find the elusive maiden name of a woman. The flavor was decidedely New England but much of what he said is appropriate anywhere. Some items that he mentioned were military and pension records, marriage records, probate records, biographies and genealogies and he mentioned many finding aids to locate in what document an ancestor may have been mentioned. Torry's New England Marriages Before 1700, the periodical Sourse Index and the Newberry Index were just a few. Among other less well known items, he mentioned Mug Books that were apparently mostly New York and the mid west.
