General

Cyndi's List: A good place to start. Cyndi has over 263,150 genealogy links. NEHGS The New England Historic Genealogical Society. The message boards, beginners tips and some articles are free but this growing New England data base is basically members only. $60/year. Higginson Book Company: Check out the large collection of genealogical books at this site. Maybe there is one for your ancestors that you weren't aware of.
Family History Library: The Mormon site. Its all free. Genealogies, some census records, the International Genealogical Index (IGI) and catalogue of documents. Genealogy Home Page: Has 4000 links including links to free software Access Genealogy: This site has a wealth of links to other sites and incudes links by states to local resources.
Rootsweb: Same data base as Ancestry. Has free web pages, forums, message boards, links to many useful sites including ship, passenger and vital records. It is the site that hosts Pastfinders' Web Page. Internet Public Library, Genealogy.

MyTrees: Claims 1 billion names in linked data bases. From Knidred Konnections and costs $15 a month or $100 a year or 10 days for $5. Get a free month with a GEDCOM upload.
Genforum: A message board for nearly every surname. Ask or answer questions. Browse or search by given name to limit the messages. GenealogyToday: This is a nice site with information for beginners as well as more experienced researchers. Hathitrust web site was created by a partnership among colleges, universities, libraries and other institutions that have large book collections that it has digitized and made available if out of copyright.
US Genweb: An all volunteer site with state and local pages, census and cemetery data. Ancestry: Free search but census, vital records other data is by subscription but that data may be available at your library Genealogy.com: Not much free but searches lead to CD's you can buy or data bases you can subscribe to. Cost is $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year. Has 130 million names.
Family Ttree Magazine: The home page of the magazine, this site is well done and offers much information. It has useful links, interesting articles and you can subscribe to it's newsletter. Genealogy Blog One of many genealogy blogs keeping up to date with current events that affect genealogists. Run by the Editor of Evertons Genealogy Helper. Usenet Genealogy Search
Pages: Newsgroups can be a source of genealogical data. this directory is a listing of 62 Usenet newsgroups on genealogy. You may find sources here that are not found anywhere else.

Billion Graves Another gravesite locator. Not up to the title yet but adding new graves quite often. Try it to see if you can find what you seek. Project Gutenberg The original books online site located at the University of Illinois. Search for an download out-of-print books. Google Books Google has scanned and made available thousands of books, some with full view and some with limited or snippet view depending on copyright status.
The Web site www.linkpendiurn.com offers links to over 3.5 million Web sites, links that lead you to Web sites specific to one surname; or links to a U.S. locality where detailed genealogical information is available. Ancestor Index from all 50 States  Called Ancestor Hunts, this site has a list of list of free genealogical web search sites and an index into obituaries.  

National

National Archives: The home page of the National Archives. Now publishing online at www.footnote.com Nara Form 180
 Print order form for military records for service after 1917. May be restricted.
Library of Congress Maps: This is a large collection of maps covering cities and towns, battles, and exploration from 1500 to 2002.
Bureau of Land Management: The BLM Government Land Records Office will provide on-line records of any land bought by or granted to an ancestor by the US Government. Order government records online.
 Ship's passenger lists, military service and pension records, land records and more.
CensusLinks: There are 7856 links to geographically organized census pages all done by volunteers. Search by location.

The Mayflower History Page
 Caleb Johnson's history of the Mayflower has data on the Pilgrims.
Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System:
Enter a name and which side he was on and receive information about an ancestor in the Civil War. This data base is now complete.(10/15/04)
Colonial America: A source of information on the colonial period and its wars from New England to Georgia.

International

British Genealogy: A great site for information on the United Kingdom and Ireland. Information for beginners with a section on doing research from ouside UK and Ireland. Irish Genealogy: The National Archives of Ireland has some guidance on seeking your Irish ancestors and several searchable data bases. It also has links to other sites of interest. Irish Passenger Lists: This a list of ships from Ireland. Click on the ship and see a list of passengers. Not searchable but ships dates are listed and passenger lists are in alphabetical order.
