History of Clermont

March 14, 2002

Presented by Oakley Seaver

Mr. Seaver came to us recommended by almost everyone. He is a 4th generation Floridian, his greatgrandfather having been one of the original settlers of the area. He says that he is 2 months older than the City of Clermont, he being born in October of 1906 and the city being chartered in December of that year.

He told us about the early tomato business and how his grandparents lost 150 acres of tomatoes in the 1894, 95 freeze. He had some pictures to show us; the earliest house, the log house and several pictures of other old buildings.

There were many questions from the floor which he handled extremely well and he made us much more aware of our city than we had been.

It was a most entertaining and informative evening.
