Sultana Ship Explosion

January 9, 2002

Mary Page

Our last program was held in the Florida Room at the Cooper Memorial Library in Clermont on Thursday, January 9, 2003. We started the meeting with our outgoing president, Bob Dill swearing in our newly elected officers. He was then sworn in as a director by president Loretta Kotzmoyer. Our new vice-president, Mary Page, then presented a program describing research she had just done involving an ancestor who was released from Andersonville Prison at the end of the Civil War and was being carried from Vicksburg, MS north on the ship, Sultana. After stopping to repair the boilers a couple of times, the ship was rocked by a violent explosion and sank killing 1547 passengers and crew, 36 more than died on the Titanic. Read more about it here.
