and Alderman of the City
Gentlemen
Henceforth I send you my return of City Taxes for the year 1837 by
which you will perceive I have collected $160.50 and that there still ? due to the City not collected $20.25
deducting my commission of 10 leaves a balance of $144.45 for which amount I
enclose a check on the bank in favor of the City Treasurer.
My health has not permitted me to attend to the collecting of the money
myself but as I am getting better shape to be able to make some progress in the
collection of debts due to the city for 1834 and 1835 some have paid but they
are few and the ? of no account. I however enclose you the names of those who
will not pay and the account they owe. In enclose also a list of the principle
debtors and the amount of their debt the most will pay but request a little
time. On the last day of this month I will make another return, when I hope to
have succeeded better than the person I had to employ
