Death Certificates & Burial Permits Issued in the

City of St. Augustine, 1880-81

 

                                                                                                                                                                                                                 

 

 

This is a continuation of the death certificates and burial permits printed in Vol. VIII, Issue 3 (Aug.1997, The Ancient City Genealogist) from the St. Augustine city papers in the St. Augustine Historical Society Research Library (MC-65).

 

Remember that these death records were sometimes written on scraps of paper (printed forms came later). The information varies and most of it is secondary source information, so it cannot be used as complete proof. In addition, legibility is a problem with these records! Trying to read pre-1900 handwriting is never easy, but the doctors didn't always know how to spell the names of the people or the diseases which adds to the difficulty.

19 July                    Capellia, Mrs L.                    This is to certify that I was the attending physician to Mrs. L Capellia and that she died of Anasarca[?] W. F. Shine MD

 8 Jan                      Crowley, Philip                     This is to certify that I was the attending physician to Phillip Crowley infant and said patient died from ..?.. infection age 5 days old.

16 June                   Delancy, Ben                        This is to certify that an inquest was held over the body of Ben Delancy colored late of said county deceased and said inquest resulted in a verdict of 'accidental drowning' as the cause of his death June 16th, 1880 - W. 31 July                    Emery, George                      I hereby certify that George Emery died at his residence on Bay Street in this city on Friday night (July 30th) at 10 1/2 o'clock of brain fever aged 40 years. W. H. Gardner MD attending physician

10 July                    Lee, infant child of Wiley and Julia Lee - I hereby certify that the infant child of Wily Lee and Julia his wife died at their residence on Spanish Street last night of irraniton[?] due to the ..?.. aged two months  W. H. Gardner MD

 

                                                                NB:  I was not the attending Physician of the child nor was I called in to prescribe for it, but in my visit to its mother saw plainly that the child was failing rapidly and had not chance for existence between ..?.. and ..?..  W. 23 November         Sebate, Miss Maurie           Dr Gardner, Dear Sir: Will you please send me a certificate of death of Miss Maurie A A Sabate who died yesterday, funeral at 4 o'clock. Nov 23rd 1880, yours truly G. F. Bunting

 

                                                                Miss Sabate was not my patient. I never saw her but once in my life and that was at least a month since. M. A. Gardner MD.  She died of consumption.
