Jose
Sanchez de Ortigosa y de Giles, the son of Salvador Sanchez de Ortigosa and
Francesca Paula de Giles, was probably born in Spain. The year of his birth and
the year he immigrated to La Florida are as yet unknown, but he and Juana Theodora
Perez y de Lansarote were married in St. Augustine the 18th of
January,1714.
Juana
was born in St. Augustine on 10 May 1696, the daughter of Juan Lorenzo Perez
and Josefa Lucia de Lansarote. Jose died 5 May 1751, Juana died in 1761, both
in St. Augustine. Jose and Juana had nine children:

complete genealogy of the second generation of this family has not been
compiled. Following are the families of the two sons who became prominent in
Florida: Jose Sanchez, Jr. and Francisco Xavier Sanchez.
Jose
Sanchez de Ortigosa y Perez married
Antonia Petronila de Espinosa on 4 August 1756 in St. Augustine.
Antonia
was born ca. 1737 in St. Augustine, the daughter of Diego Espinosa and Josefa
de Torres. Diego Espinosa owned a large plantation in what is now the northeast
part of St. Johns County, sometimes known as Diego Plains.

Francisco
Xavier Sanchez de Ortigosa y Perez
had two families. His relationship with Beatrice Piedra, a Afree mulatta,@
produced nine children, all of whom were baptised and provided for in Francisco=s will.

Francisco
and Maria del Carmen Hill were married in St. Augustine on 28 December 1787.
Records indicate that Maria was 17 and Francisco was 51. Maria, born in
Charleston, SC., is the daughter of
Theophilis Hill and Teresa Tomas. Two of Maria=s sisters married her husband=s
nephews.
