2011-2012 Essay Contest Essay Length: 600-1,000 Words • Deadline Date: December 1, 2011 Sponsored by: Sophia Fleming Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution For further information, please contact: TOPIC: Pretend you were alive during the War of 1812 and had a friend who has become famous in history because of standing up for America during that exciting but dangerous time. Describe the person and how he or she stood up for America. Explain why it is important to honor such heroes when we celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812. DIRECTIONS: 1. FRIEND: The “friend” in your essay must be a real person and not a make-believe person. The “friend” must have become famous in history. 2. FORM: Handwritten in black ink, typed or prepared on a computer or word processor with a non-script font no smaller than 12 pt. and no larger than 14 pt. (ESSAY MUST BE THE STUDENT’S OWN WORK) 3. NUMBER OF WORDS: 4. TITLE PAGE: The following must be listed on the title page. Contestant’s phone number and area code 5. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Essay must have a bibliography listing all references utilized. Internet resources, if used, should be cited in similar format to that used for printed sources. Add the electronic address used to access the document as supplementary information. Any essay with information copied directly from sources without using quotes will be disqualified. Any essay without a bibliography will be disqualified.
