"Forgotten Patriots Who Supported the American Struggle for Independence"


Open to 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th Graders

Essay Length: 5th grade essays must have 300-600 words
6th, 7th, and 8th grades essays must have 600-1000 words

TOPIC: Focus on the often unrecognized people and groups, including African Americans, Native
Americans, Hispanics, and others who provided military, patriotic and public service in
support of the American Revolution. Describe a particular person or group and how they
supported the cause for American Independence. Explain why it is especially important to
honor the unsung heroes and often forgotten patriots.

DIRECTIONS:

1. FORM: Handwritten in black ink, typed or prepared on a computer or word processor with a non-script font no smaller than 12 pt. and no larger than 14 pt. (ESSAY MUST BE THE STUDENT’S OWN WORK)

2. NUMBER OF WORDS:
Essay Length: 5th grade ess.ays must have 300-600 words. 6th, 7th, and 8th grades essays must have 600-1000 words
All words count. The title page and bibliography are excluded.
Dates count as one word. The word “a” counts as one word.

3. TITLE PAGE: The following must be listed on the title page.
Title of Essay:
“Forgotten Patriots Who Supported the American Struggle for Independence2"
(A subtitle is permitted if written below the topic)
Contestant’s full name and address
(Including street , rural route, or Post Office Box; City, State, and Zip Code)
NOTE: This information will not be made public, but is important to have should the student win State and/or National Competition.

Contestant’s phone number and area code
Contestant’s e-mail address if available
Contestant’s school and grade level
Name of sponsoring DAR chapter (Sophia Fleming Chapter)
Number of words in the essay

4. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Essay must have a bibliography listing all references utilized. Internet resources, if used, should be cited in similar format to that used for printed sources. Add the electronic address used to access the document as supplementary information. Any essay with information copied directly from sources without using quotes will be disqualified. Any essay without a bibliography will be disqualified.
