2012 Scholarship

Directions to Clay County, Florida High School Applicants for the
2012 Sophia Fleming Scholarship


Please Note: It is very important that you carefully follow the directions below in order to be a finalist for this scholarship.

1. After you have completed your application documents, ask others to review them, suggest changes, and/or make corrections. Reviewers might be your school counselor, a teacher, a family member, or other adult.

2. There are three sections to be completed when applying for a Sophia Fleming Scholarship, as given below.

A. Section I: Present an essay of 400 words or less entitled “What Being an American Means to Me.” If your essay exceeds 400 words, your application will be disqualified.

Recommended Guide for Your Essay:
A good way to approach an essay is to envision it as a five part project.

An essay is made up of (1) the introduction, (2) three or more main points (the body), and (3) the conclusion. It might follow this format:
Introduction Point One Point Two Point Three Conclusion

B. Section II: List any community service, awards, and/or recognitions you received throughout grades 9 through 12.
Awards might be monetary rewards or plaques, pins, and certificates for outstanding performance. Recognitions might be your name in the school or community newspaper for participation in a national, school or community activity or school announcements of such participations.

C. Section III: Present a minimum or two Letters of Recommendation – one from an adult school representative and one from a community member who has worked with you or witnessed your contribution to the community.

A school representative might be your school counselor, the school principal, or a teacher. A community member might be your church minister or the president of an organization such as Lions Club or Kiwanis Club.

3. Deadline for Completed Application to Be Received: February 24, 2012

4. Applicant must mail application documents to:
