Willis, A. M. Rylander, S. E. Pool, V. M. Santina and L. R. Parker, and viewed the body of the deceased, the jury finding the follow verdict: 'That A. J. Chauncey did feloniously and with malice aforethought shoot and kill said J. B. Daniels with single-barrel breech-loading shot gun, loaded with power and leaden bullets, and we, the jurors, find said A. J. Chauncey guilty of murder in the first degree.' According to the evidence given at the coroner's inquest Chauncey had accompanied Daniels home and was invited to stay to dinner. They were sitting on the porch of the house and no one heard the talk which led to Chauncey getting up and starting off, rufusing to eat dinner. Daniels followed, insisting upon his remaining, when Chauncey turned and pointed his shot gun at Daniels, when Daniels said 'you s-- of a b--, if you shoot me with that gun I'll kill you.' Chauncey replied 'you call be a son-- of a b-- and I will kill you' and emptied the entire charge of No. 6 shot into Daniels' upper left breast, tearing an oblong hole, three inches in its long diameter and two inches in its smaller diameter, and effecting instant death. Mrs. Daniels, wife of the murdered man, was the only witness to the terrible affair, she coming out of the house just as Chauncey started off and was within a few feet of the men when her husband was shot. Both men had been drinking some but there was apparently no ill feeling between them up to the time they went to Daniel's house, for W. C. Harrison testified that he was with them a short time before and they appeared to be on friendly terms. A PRESS reporter called on Chauncey at the county jail yesterday, and while he would not go into the details of the affair, we learned that on Thursday he was to do some work for Mr. Bailey, and Daniels went to Chauncey's house before he left and insisted on his going home with him. Chauncey demurred, but Daniels insisted, and they went together, meeting Harrison at the bridge when they all took a drink of whisky. Upon reaching Daniels', Chauncey repaired a broken wagon shaft for him, leaving his gun and bundle at the barn some distance from the house, after which they went and sat on the front piazza of the house for quite awhile. Chauncey says he saw Daniels was getting mad and he got up and started off, Daniels still insisting on his staying to dinner and following him. The two kept getting faster and Chauncey picked up his gun as he passed, when Daniels said you son-- of a b-- you've got the gun, but I'll kill you, when, according to Chauncey, acting as he though in self defense, he pointed the gun under his left arm and behind him at Daniels and pulled the trigger. The affair is a most deplorable one, as Daniels was a healthy, able-bodied young man of 34 years, and a prominent trucker on Sanibel, and leaves a wife and three little children to mourn his untimely death, while Chauncey is a man of 54 years with a wife and five small girls who were, to a large extent, dependent upon his labor for their daily bread. The PRESS extends heartfult sympathy to all who are afflicted by the awful tragedy.

Fort Myers News-Press -- 11 May 2005 -- Friends invited to share a celebration of life.
Amy Pekol-Dixon, a well known area resident and respected real estate professional, died tragically April 17, 2005, in her home, along with her precious daughter Olivia and sweet baby Grace. Amy was a beautiful, loving, incredibly kind, generous, and gracious woman, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. Amy opened her arms to the world and people were drawn to her warmth. Amy was born on March 21, 1970, in Joliet, Illinois, attended the Joliet Montessori School, Troy Craughwell, Troy Shorewood, Troy Junior High School, before moving to Southwest Florida. Amy graduated from Bishop Verot High School in 1988 (voted Most Outgoing), attended the University of Central Florida. Amy lived in Jamaica for a short time and ran a children's day care in Nagril. Amy joined her mother's real estate firm in 1990, sharing the family real estate practice since that time. Amy also helped in the family's third generation restaurant business in Illinois, whenever she had the opportunity. In the past year, Amy proudly represented her family firm, June Pekol Realty Inc., managing the sales at High Point Place, a new high-rise development off McGregor Boulevard, on the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers. Amy met the challenge and enjoyed sharing the excitement of bringing new life to an area she believed in with her family, friends and associates. Amy loved to design, decorate, garden and shop. She was an excellent cook and loved to entertain. Amy's clients, customers, friends and family will miss the many benefits of her warm personality, thoughtful manner and creative abilities. The will remember her bright smile. Amy Pekol loved life. She made people feel good about themselves. She treated everyone with equal respect and compassion. Amy looked people straight in the eye, she listened with sincere interest, she was spiritual, she gave good advice, she did small thoughtful things and made many generous gestures for those she knew and loved as well as for total strangers. She never looked for a thank you...when small favors wer left unnoticed. She believed that giving has its own reward. Amy loved her family and they were wonderfully close. She encouraged her mother to sell her home and live with them, to help with the girls and plan a new home near hers. The family worked together daily and could often be seen out at the end of the day enjoying an evening meal or sharing a Sunday visit. "Good night, sleep tight, wake up bright to do what is right with all your might".. a family credo. Amy Pekol-Dixon lived a good life, set many good examples and as long as there is memory, Amy will continue to inspire. Olivia and Gracie's lively and sweet spirits were a reflection of their mother's warmth, interest, love and devotion. Five year old Olivia loved to read, to draw, to paint,, to cook and to sing. She did a great "Two Minute Tidy". She was intent on finishing a project. She could reach the top of the stairs in four seconds. She caught a big fish, visited Disney in Orlando, and Chicago museums, aquarium, galleries, lakefront and family. Olivia loved her teachers and friends at school. She enjoyed ballet, gymnastics, and horse back riding. She just learned to ride her new bike without training wheels. Olivia was loving, smart, strong and able beyond her years. Little Gracie was joyous, free spirit, a precious baby filled with energy and bursting with life...walking and talking early. Gracie loved books and people and was like a little sponge, drinking in all that there is to learn in this new life she was living with enormous enthusiasm. Since their births, people had commented that the girls were "old souls" and had "wisdom and ability beyond their years". Grace adored her big sister and followed her every move, almost always with her bear "Coco" in tow. She loved to please and tease, to chase and be chased. She loved to snuggle and to be read to. FORT MYERS NEWS-PRESS, March 9, 1933--George W. Dunham, 71 years old, pioneer developer of Fort Myers and one of Southwest Florida's staunchest boosters, died unexpectedly early yesterday morning at his home. Death come with shocking suddenness as Mr. Dunham had been taken to his home Tuesday fromt he hospital apparently convalescing from an operation two weeks ago to remove an intestinal obstruction. The immediate cause of death was given as acute dilatation of the heart. Mr. Dunham had been in a serious condition while confined in the hospital, physicaians resorting to the use of glucose injections to restore his strength. He had shown steady improvement since the operation, however, and his death yesterday was a blow to his many friends. Born in Lincoln, Neb., Mr. Dunham had a varied career which took him to Oklahoma during the famous "land rush" when that state was thrown open to homesteading and into the newspaper business as a member of the staff of the Oklahoma State Capitol at Guthrie, Okla. He had always been interested in real estate, however, and he had devoted the major part of his life to real estate developments of one form or another. An ardent booster of Fort Myers from the first day he came here 20 years ago, Mr. Dunham worked unceasingly to bring in new residents and to advertise the benefits of the section to prospective home-makers. One of the oldest and most exclusie subdivision in the city, York Manor, was the product of his energy. York Manor origianlly was a portion of the Riverside subdivision on which Mr. Dunham started development in 1912, but was separated from the parent tract and given a new name through a foreclosure proceeding. The entire subdivision had been sold out and many homes built long before the boom. Mr. Dunham also worked vigorously in obtaining the East End bridge across the Caloosahatachee river, at that time the only span across the river in this section. He was instrumental in forming the company which floated a stock issue here and from the proceeds of this sale the bridge was constructed in 1921. Three years later the span was taken over by the county and made toll-free. He also was among the organizers of the Fort Myers Grove company, planned originally as a co-operative citrus project. He also helped organize the Lee County Bank, Title and Trust company and was a member of its first board of directors. He was a member of the Tamiami Trail Blazers, who trekked through he Everglades...In addition to his widow, Mr. Dunham is survived by a son, Wilson Dunham, who is a student at Miami university in Oxford, Ohio and two brothers, Frank Dunham of Fort Myers and Fred Dunham of Chicago. Mrs. Nelson Hough of Fort Myers is a niece. funeral services probably will be held tomorrow. Definite arrangements had not been completed last night. The body is in charge of Lawrence A. Powell.

Caloosa Belle Feb 19, 2009 LABELLE - Mary M. Dunlap, passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009. She was born in Delaware and moved to Miami in 1921, with her mother and father, Anne R. and John C. Miller, two sisters and three brothers. A graduate of Miami High School, she worked for the First National Bank of Miami, which evolved into Southeast Bank, and for Southern Bell Telephone Company. During World War II, she was a civilian employee of the U.S. Signal Corps. It was during her tenure at the First National Bank that she met Tully F. Dunlap. They were married in the Coral Gables Methodist Church on July 30, 1939. They met during the Great Depression when salaries were low and times were tough. "I joined the bank in 1935 and was earning $50.00 a month," Dunlap recalled. "Mary came to work in 1937 at $60.00 a month. We got engaged in 1938 and were married in 1939". In his first banking job, Tully was a "runner", a "messenger, odd jobs man" and Mary was a stenographer. Some of their experiences would raise eyebrows of today's bank employees. "Before we could marry," Dunlap said, "we had to get permission from the bank president, Edward C. Romfh. A bank employee could not borrow money without first getting the approval of Mr. Romfh." Over time, Tully Dunlap's banking career flourished. He headed three small banks in the Miami area, merged them into the state-wide Sun Banks, and became chairman of that banks holding company before moving into other top posts with banking institutions on the Florida west coast. In retirement, Mary and Tully settled in LaBelle, where Mary was active in the Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion Auxiliary. They also owned a condominium in Coral Gables and maintained close ties with friends and business interests in the Miami area. Throughout her life, Mary was active in a wide variety of community and church organizations. She was a Girl Scout leader, a volunteer worker at hospitals in Coral Gables and Winter Park, and a member of the Riviera Country Club and the Century Club in Coral Gables. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Robert F. Dunlap, a Miami attorney; a daughter, Mary D. Peacock, a school teacher in Winter Haven; son-in-law, Lawrence Peacock, a school teacher in Winter Haven; and four grandchildren, Robert Tully Dunlap, Lauren Mary Dunlap, Jake Franklin Peacock, and Jennifer Elizabeth Peacock. Her husband said, "When I returned from service in World War II, I asked Mary to quit her job, to stay home and be a full-time wife and later a full-time mother. She did that and did it well. Mary was a kind, considerate, generous and gracious lady, a devoted wife, a loving mother and a proud grandmother. She has been my motivation and inspiration." Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 at the Carlson Memorial United Methodist Church, 310 Campbell Street, LaBelle. Private burial service will be at Woodlawn Mausoleum (North). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Carlson Memorial United Methodist Church, 310 Campbell Street, LaBelle, FL 33935
