Fort
Myers News-Press, December
8, 2011 - . On Saturday, December 3,
2011 at 4:00 PM, we lost our beloved Josh
William Fernandez, son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend.
Josheman as
his Mom would call him, was born June 5, 1990 and from day one, he
impacted
everyone he met. He was a precocious and fun loving child and as a
teen, he was
headstrong and fearless. Josh was artistic in many ways. He designed
all of his
own tattoos and taught himself to play drums, guitar, piano and several
other
instruments. Josh had a way of making friends with anyone he met. No
one who
knew him ever said, "that's just Josh". They said, "that's my
FRIEND Josh". He and his brother made many trips to Georgia with his
grandparents. He loved the fresh air in the mountains, where many
cherished
memories were created. He also loved the beach and attending the
medieval fair
with his mother and brother.
At
the age
of 17, Josh was diagnosed with a rare disorder called Chiari
Malformation which
led to brain surgery at 18 years old. Soon thereafter he was hit again
with
another devastating diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis. Through all this,
Josh
always maintained his sharp wit and beautiful smile, but sadly in the
end,
Myasthenia Gravis took him from us at 21 years old. What Josh left us
was a web
of friendships, with him as the common thread. He was and always will
be a
bright spot in our lives. We all love you and will forever miss you
Josheman.
He
is
survived by his mother , Tina Fernandez; his brother, John Fernandez;
his
maternal grandparents, Mary and Bill Fernandez; his Uncle and Aunt Joe
and
Pamela Fernandez, his God Mother Lori Clendenen and many Aunts, Uncles
Cousins,
Nieces and Nephew. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM

Elder Willie Ester Ferrell, Sr., age 87, of Ft.
Myers slipped quietly into the arms of his Loving Heavenly Father on
Friday, March 4, 2005 at his home. Born on June 8, 1917 in Americus,
GA, the first born of William and Ina (Murray) Ferrell. During his
youth, he affectionately acquired the nick name of "Bud". During the
course of his young life he learned to seek God for refuge in troubled
times and there found protection and fellowship. While young Willie was
working in the fields, he would stop, look up toward heaven and pray to
his Heavenly Father. Willie prayed not only for strength to get through
the day, but also for better days, a day when he would be able to enjoy
the comfort of his own home. In 1935 Willie moved to Ft. Myers with his
family and became a member of St. John's Missionary Baptist Church. In
1937 he met Emma Mae Woodberry and they were united in holy matrimony
on June 19, 1939. They started their family here before moving to
Bessemer, AL. In 1951 the family moved to Buffalo, NY where he joined
the Calvary Baptist Church. Under the leadership of Pastor Lucy H.
Young the family joined the Young Tabernacle Holiness Church in 1960,
where he was called to preach God's Word and was actively involved
serving faithfully as Deacon, Usher Board President and Youth Pastor.
During these years, Willie and Emma were blessed with ten children.
Willie retired from Cement Solvey, Allied Chemical plant, Tonawanda, NY
in 1978 and they moved back to Ft. Myers. They purchased a large home
and decided that they needed someone to share that home with, so Willie
and Emma set up the Ferrell Family Group Home. The home still runs
today under the management of one of their daughters. Willie and Emma
established and founded the Fellowship Church of God in Christ in 1981.
In the early days of their ministry they met in their home until they
purchased a building at 1931 Palmetto Avenue. After many years of
faithfulness, they were blessed to rebuild the church from the ground
up. Willie is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Emma, his ten

FORT
MYERS PRESS - March 8, 1944
The body of Bishop E. Fink, bicycle repairman, was
found yesterday afternoon floating in a canal which empties into the
Caloosahatchee river near the end of Gasparilla drive just two days
after he left Punta Rassa in a small inboard motor boat bound for Fort
Myers. He would have been 48 years old today. The body was first
discovered by Anna Jenkins, negro maid employed by the Parker Holts,
whose home is located on the river between Gasparilla drive and the
canal. The negro saw the body bobbing on the water from a upstairs
window while ironing. She called Mrs. Holt who investigated and
notified police through her husband, who is city attorney. Police chief
Charles Moore and Justice of Peach Hiram Bryant who investigated,
identified the body as that of Mr. Fink, whose relatives had been
apprehensive since Monday. The body was badly discolored, indicating it
had been in the water for many hours. Dr. M. F. Johnson placed the time
of death sometime Sunday afternoon but did not say whether it resulted
from drowning or some other cause. There was a deep gash over the right
eye and another flesh wound on top of the head. The boat, a 16-foot
skiff, had not been found late last night despite a search by the coast
guard and CAP planes. Tony Alvarez, riding with A. H. "Bert" Draughon
in a plane, spotted what he thought was wreckage of a boat along the
river but investigation disclosed it was only washed up planks. The
boat was painted gray with the name "Suits Me." Because of the head
wound and the missing boat, officers as well as Thomas J. Fink, a
brother of the dead man, thought there might have been foul play. After
conferring with Sumter Leitner, assistant state attorney, Justice
Bryant called a coroner's inquest for 10 o'clock this morning. Thomas
Fink said his brother left Punta Rassa at 3:30 Sunday afternoon to
bring the boat back to Fort Myers to place it on sale. He said that
Jesse Fouts, who saw him leave alone, established the time. Although
Mr. Fink was fond of fishing, there was no tackle in the boat, his
brother said. He said the dead man was an excellent swimmer. When his
brother did not reach town in a reasonable length of time, Thomas Fink
notified the coast guard and police and engaged the help of Mr. Fouts,
Bob King and other boat owners who joined in the search out of Punta
Rassa. The CAP was called in yesterday morning and planes were
patrolling all day. Surviving besides his brother are Mrs. T. J. Fink,
Sr., his mother; Mrs. J. L. Nieblack and Mrs. N. H. Blasingim, sisters.
The funeral as been set for 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon and other
arrangements will be announced later. Spooner and Engelhardt have
charge of the body. Mr. Fink came to Fort Myers from Bartow in 1909. A
veteran of World War I and a member of the American Legion, he operated
a bicycle repair shop on Second Street for several years. At one time
he owned a trained bird dog named "Buck" who begged for dimes at bars
and other places. Known all over town, he carried the money to a
grocery, exchanged it for a can of dog food and then brought the can
back for the contributor to open. The trick became so famous that the
dog was deluged with dimes, whereupon he started burying them. "Buck"
was run over a few years ago.

his last in the arms of his sorrow-stricken wife,l who scarcely

was no other minister here at the time, Dr. L. C. Washburn, an old

Fort Myers
News-Press,27 Dec 2007--
Gary Freis was known to outsiders as a wrestling coach, a man
who taught a sport, the finer points of take-downs, half-Nelsons and
armbars. Those are technical wrestling terms. The former Fort Myers
High School wrestling coach, who died at 69 on Christmas morning, was
about more than tips on pinning opponents."He's my second father,"
current Fort Myers wrestling coach Matt Markowski said. "I had that
kind of relationship to him."So did others. Many others. In the way
coaches are measured, Freis was successful. The Green Wave won team
state titles in 1987 and 1998. Eighteen of his wrestlers from 1982
through his final year in 2002 won state titles. He's in the National
Wrestling Hall of Fame. Those achievements aren't the full measure of a
man, though. His former wrestlers remember a man who transformed those
who needed transforming and nudged those who needed nudging."He'll be
deeply missed," said Dr. Paul Tritel, a Fort Myers physician who
wrestled at Fort Myers and graduated in 1988. "He lives on in all of
us."Tritel went on to the University of Pennsylvania."He taught me
about hard work and discipline and he always told us not to make
excuses," Tritel said. "He was a father figure for a lot of the kids.
He helped a lot of the kids who didn't come from good homes. He gave a
lot of his own time and money towards the kids in terms of paying entry
fees and giving them rides to tournaments. He gave selflessly."In 1988,
Tritel was a senior and co-captain who wrestled in the 160-pound weight
class. The other co-captain was Aaron Danzig, who won a state title at
125 pounds. Danzig is now an assistant U.S. attorney in Atlanta."Great
coach, great teacher, great man," Danzig, 37, said.Danzig, who wrestled
at Harvard, recalled a coach who would open the wrestling room on
Christmas morning if his athletes wanted more work. He recalled a coach
who drove athletes to tournaments on his own dime. Everywhere.
Anywhere. Tampa.Brandon. Miami."He used to have this series of old
station wagon jalopies," Danzig said. For weekend tournaments, Freis
would pile wrestlers in a jalopy and hit the road."On the way home if
it was getting late we'd get tired and fall asleep," Danzig said. "He'd
take out this old pipe and bang it on the roof. It was like a
thunderbolt. We'd all jump up and he'd say," Now that you're awake,
let's talk some wrestling.'"Gary Freis' wrestling talk ended Christmas
morning. In recent years, he has battled heart problems, diabetes and
leukemia. In the middle of the night on Christmas Eve, according to his
daughter, Kim Freis, her father awoke. He didn't feel well. His family
called 911. He was admitted to Southwest Florida Regional. At first,
according to Kim Freis, he appeared stable.Between 9:30 a.m. and 9:45
a.m. Tuesday, things got worse."Basically, the leukemia was just
overtaking his body, he was very weak and he had a major heart attack,"
Kim Freis said.Gary Freis died two years to the day after his
granddaughter, Adriana Noel Olding, was born.Freis had another
daughter, Heather Olding, who is 39. He left behind a grandson,
7-year-old Austin Bullwinkle Olding, who called him "Pop-pop.""He
(Austin) said 'There's only one person who can call me Bullwinkle and
that's Pop-pop,'" Kim Freis said.Freis bragged about Austin, especially
after he ran a 10K (6.2 miles) race just before turning 7."My grandson
did a 6-mile race when he was 6," Gary Freis liked to say, according to
Kim.Meanwhile, friends are left remembering one of the most storied
coaches in Southwest Florida high school history.Lee County school
superintendent Jim Browder was Fort Myers principal during parts of
Freis' tenure as coach. He knows how much Freis invested in his
wrestlers. Not just time. Not just money. Not just sweat."It was his
whole life," Browder said. "It was the life of his family."Fort Myers
resident Brad Rothenberg's two sons, Paul and Willie wrestled for
Freis. His daughter, Taylor, is a Fort Myers High statistician with the
wrestling team. Rothenberg's boys are in their 20s now. His daughter is
15. Gary Rothenberg considered Freis a friend."Gary always saw a
wrestling match as two against two," Rothenberg said. "It was always
him and his wrestler against you and your wrestler. It was his job to
develop the best game plan for the match and drill you on that game
plan and it was your job to execute. If you won, it was your victory.
If you lost, you both shared the defeat."Angelo Vaughn, 43, works for
the Lee County Sheriff's Department as director of the department's

to Sally Freis, Gary's wife, as "mom."Vaughn participates in police
wrestling and turned to Freis for wrestling advice. And more."We were

Vaughn said. How did Freis look at life?"Coach Freis looked at life very
simple," Vaughn said. "He was not one to bring attention to himself.
Coach Freis was the type of man who always wanted you to succeed. He
didn't settle for being average. He wanted you to be better.

FORT
MYERS NEWS-PRESS, Aug. 25, 1933--Christian Henry Funck,
one of the oldest residents of this section of Florida and
affectionately known to hundreds of friends as "Dad" Funck, died early
yesterday morning at the residence of Frank MacDonald at the
intersection of Anderson and Cleveland avenues where he had lived for
several years. He was found dead in bed and apparently had died in his
sleep. Mr. Funck would have been 85 years old on Oct. 29. Although in
ill health for some time, his death was unexpeted. He had been up and
around as usual Wednesday, although visibly weaker than for some time.
He was stricken with double pneumonia last winter, but waged a
successful fight against the disease, although it left his frail body
much weakened. Death apparently came but an hour or so before Mrs.
MacDonald rapped on the door of the aged man's room, a custom whenever
he failed to arise at a certain hour. When there was no response, Mrs.
MacDonald summoned "Uncle Lou" Stewart, Mr. Funck's closest friend
here, and entrance was effected through the door of an adjoining room.
The aged man's facial expression and the posture of his body indicated
there had been a peaceful dropping off as his worn out heart stopped
for its final rest. "Dad" Funct was known and loved by scores of people
for a charitable nature which had divested him of practically all
worldly goods. His friends recalled yesterday the numerous charitable
acts which he performed, most of them so carefully that the person
aided did not know his benefactor. Retired and living a quiet life,
"Dad" Funck had few demands of his own which needed satisfying and his
$100 a month pension provided him with ample money to take care of his
own needs and leave a sizeable amount each month for charity. Recently
his pension had been cut to $90, but this was more than ample for him.
Mr. Funct was born in Baltimore, Oct. 29, 1848. His mother and father
were born in Germany. When 13 years of age, he ran away from home and
enlisted in the Union army as a drummer boy on Dec. 8, 1861. After
being wounded, he was honorably discharged on Aug. 20, 1862, and came
to Florida a short time later for his health. He landed at Punta Rassa
on Dec. 20, 1876, and used to recall that the first year he was here
there were but 22 votes cast in the city election. He was married here
52 years ago last May, His widow, Mrs. Carrie C. Funck, surviving him.
Four children also survive. They are mrs. Homer Klay, Mrs. A. J.
Johnston, C. O. Funck and Alfred O. Funck. There are four
grandchildren, Homer Klay, jr., Mrs. D. H. Lamons, sr., Miss Lois Klay
and Miss Claudia Bethel, the latter of Miami. Two sisters and a
brother, who live in Baltimore, also survive. They are Dr. J. William
Funck, Mrs. J. E. Smith and Mrs. Rose Healty. Mr. Funck operated a
bakery here for nearly 50 years...Mr. Funck was a member of St. Luke's
Episcopal church here, attending regularly whenever his physical
condition permitted. Funeral services have been planned for Sunday at
that church, with Judge N. G. Stout reading the service in the absence
of the rector, the Rev. F. A. Shore. The Masonic burial ritual will be
given by William R. Anderson at the cemetery. The Spanish War Veterans,
who had made Mr. Funck an honorary member of their organization will
furnish the American flag with which the casket will be draped. The
body will lie in state at the Lawrence A. Powell funeral home where it
may be viewed by friends until takekn to the church sunday.

FORT MYERS NEWS-PRESS,
Feb. 23, 1932--Leonard "Dutch" Futch, accused of being the hit-and-run
driver who struck and seriously injured his brother, Hardy
Futch, was under an added charge of manslaughter last night,
after the young man had died as the result of his injuries. Hardy Futch
died yesterday afternoon at the Lee Memorial hospital despite vallant
efforts of physicians to save him. His left leg, mangled in an unusual
accident, had been removed below the hip in a futile effort to save his
life. The accused brother was free under a bond of $1,000 on the
manslaughter charge and $500 on the reckless driving charge. He will be
given a hearing Thursday morning before County Judge L. Y. Redwine.
Leonard Futch, several years younger than the brother whose death he is
charged with causing, surrendered to city police Sunday morning after
county officers had failed to locate him Saturday night following the
accident. A second accident in which he was involved occurred a few
minutes after the truck he was driving is alleged to have sideswiped
Hardy Futch, who was riding on the running board of a car driven by
Mrs. Richard Farr. Leonard Futch is charged with driving the truck into
an automobile driven by C. L. McMillan, former deputy sheriff, a few
minutes after the first accident. McMillan, who had but a fleeting
glimpse of the driver, told Deputy Roy Larson and Sheriff F. B. Tippins
he believed Futch was driving the truck which struck his car. The dead
man was returning to the city from the county fair Saturday night. He
was riding on the running board, he told officers at the hospital
before his death, as Mrs. Farr was accompanied by another woman and a
child, who filled the only seat in the car. Futch said he had his head
inside the car and was talking when struck by the truck. Officers
charge that Leonard Futch did not stop after either of the two
accidents. Following his surrender Sunday, he told officers he did not
know he had struck anyone. Hardy Futch was a Punta Rassa fisherman.
Leonard Futch operates a fish marker here near the police station.
