FORT MYERS NEWS-PRESS, April 1, 1936--Franklin
Jacke, 61-year-old store keeper at the Koreshan Unity,
committed suicide by drowning early yesterday morning in the Estero
river. In a note addressed to the Koreshans, Jacke gave approaching
blindness as the reason for taking his life. "I am about blind and
can't stand it any longer," he wrote. When Jacke was missed at the
store, the Koreshans headed by Brother George Hunt, started a search
and first found the note which also contained instructions wehre to
find the body. The sheriff's office was notified immediately, and the
body was located in the river by Deputy E. P. McAuley and State Officer
Homer Klay. Deputy McAuley said that deep scratches on Jacke's face
made it appear that he had treid to claw out his eyes either before of
after jumping into the water. He was drowned in a comparatively shallow
spot and the body was recovered by wading and dragging with a garden
rake. Jacke had been a member of the Koreshan Unity for 33 years,
coming to Lee county to join the Estero community from his native home
in Wisconsin. He is said to have relatives in Wisconsin. The text of
the note follows: "Dear Folks: I am about blind, cannot see to do my
work today. With all the business cares which no one knows, I am unable
to stand this. I have gone to the river. Look for my hat on the point.
I am so blind cannot see people in the store; just a dim outline." The
hat was found by Brother Hunt and nearby he discovered Jacke's coat and
a handkerchief neatly folded on the bank. He also left his watch and
chain with his clothes. for many years Jacke had operated a general
store which belonged to the Koreshan unity. The Koreshans told Deputy
McAuley they would take care of the body themselves.

Fort
Myers News-Press June 20, 2010 - Charles Michael
"Mike" Jackson, 68, of Fort
Myers, died suddenly at home Saturday, May 29, of a heart attack. He
was born November 24, 1941, in Wichita, KS, to the late Irene Carrel
Jackson and Charles Lewis Jackson. The Jackson family moved to Fort
Myers in 1958 when Mike was a junior in high school. He quickly fell in
love with three things: fishing, sailing, and Shirley Kinsey, who was
one class behind him at Fort Myers High School. They met during
competitive sailboat racing at the Royal Palm Yacht Club, of which both
families were founding members. During the lively and sometimes
contentious races, the Jacksons and the Kinseys often found themselves
locked in a duel for the finish line. After graduation from high school
in 1959, Mike attended the University of Florida in pursuit of a
political science degree. Shirley followed a year later seeking a
degree in English literature. They were married after Mike graduated
from undergraduate school in 1963. Mike was an exemplary student at UF,
a member of Florida Blue Key, and was inducted into the University of
Florida Hall of Fame.Mike enrolled at UF law school in 1963 on an LSAT
merit scholarship while Shirley worked and cared for their first child.
Mike graduated and became a member of the Florida Bar in 1966. They
moved back to Fort Myers where Mike began a law practice that lasted
more than 30 years.
Mike served his community and his church while providing for his wife
and three kids. His family was his greatest joy, but his second
greatest was learning. A small sample of authors on the shelves of his
well-used library shows his broad range of interests and his voracious
appetite for knowledge. Sagan, Hawking, Schrodinger, Escher, Teller,
Bohr and Fermi are a few scientists whose books stood ready over the
years for a second reading or quick reference. C.S. Lewis provided
forays into both science fiction and Christian doctrine. Also at the
ready were Keynes, de Tocqueville, Churchill and Reagan, among hundreds
of others.
During his time in Fort Myers, Mike devoted himself to many pursuits,
including fishing, SCUBA diving, flying, race-car driving, competitive
shooting, running, tennis and basketball. Mike was a die-hard fan of
the University of Florida Fighting Gators. He was famous for his
barbecue ribs, his annual battle royale putting up the family Christmas
tree, his enthusiastic pumpkin carving, and his hair-raising yarns of
ominous Moonbears, mysterious Fog Plows and terrible Wooldraggers told
to two generations of wide-eyed children.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife Shirley. Their marriage lasted 47
years, and like all marriages of that length, it included times of
trial. But Mike and Shirley experienced a blessed rekindling, and loved
each other more the day Mike died than the day they were married.Mike
is also survived by their three kids, Shelly (Charles) Brown, Rachael
(Mark) Pennington and Matthew (Sarah) Jackson; their six grandkids,
Kinsey, Madison, Jackson, Lily Grace, Carter and Madeleine; his brother
Robert; and a large extended family.
Anyone wishing to acknowledge his life is invited to make a
contribution to theAmerican Heart Association . Or just a card would be
nice: Jackson Family, P.O. Box 2509, Fort Myers, FL 33902.

appropriate sermon, applying same to the sudden taking off of the
deceased. Winding up his discourse he referred to the deceased with the
words that "he was a good man," and what more could be said of any man.
The tribute was grand. Quite a large concourse of friends followed the
remains to their last resting place, the interment being under the
charge of the undertaking firm of C. F. Roberts & Co. To those
who mourn, we extend sympathy, and point them to the great Master of
the Universe for comfort in their hour of trial. Royal Palm Lodge No.
16, K. of P., of which lodge Mr. Johns was a member, turned out in a
body and attended the services.

Beal Hallmark of Merritt Island, Devola Gillam of Orlando, Laura Poloka
of Pittsburg, and Glenda Johnson; he also leaves nephews Amos Silcox of

Earl's long and storied life was filled with adventure though he never
rambled far from his birthplace. His lifetime experiences included:
completed only seventh grade in school; helped his father farm on
Sanibel until the hurricane of 1926 spoiled the land; worked as a
fishing guide on Captiva and shook hands with President Teddy
Roosevelt; delivered telegrams in Fort Myers for a while and met Thomas
Edison and Henry Ford (Ford offered to take him to Michigan to work,
but Earl preferred to remain on Sanibel.); both Belton and Earl
apprenticed at Hansen Boat Ways in Fort Myers under the late Ben
Taylor; returned to fishing and making moonshine on Sanibel; made and
fished his own cast nets; fished with a stop net crew in Charlotte
County while living in Punta Gorda; worked for the Punta Gorda Fish
Company building and repairing fish houses from Punta Gorda to Tarpon
Bay on Sanibel; worked as a ships pilot for oil exploration in
Charlotte Harbor; located to a fish camp at White Rock (west side of
Pine Island) in 1955, fished for scallops in season and developed a
market for seahorses and starfish worldwide (written up in National
Geographic); moved to Woodring Point in 1960 following Hurricane
Donna's destruction of the White Rock fish camp; lived at and worked
for South Seas Plantation as a night watchman from 1966 to 1977 with
his retirement; from 1977 Earl lived on Woodring Point helping
Esperanza with her animals and selling bait at her dock on the bay;
remained at Woodring Point until 1999 at which time he moved to an
assisted living facility in Fort Myers.
Earl was a special friend to Sam and Esperanza Woodring, and also to
Ralph and his family until he drew his last breath. He was an
accomplished naturalist and fisherman, and a true gentleman. He loved
animals, children, and Sanibel Island. His favorite expression was
'It's always something!' Sanibel has lost a genuine native son.

FORT MYERS NEWS-PRESS, Jan.
31, 1937--The open gas jet of a small heater caused the death early
yesterday morning of William O. Johnson,
59-year-old manager of the Lee County Ice Cream company at 1301
Victoria avenus. The body was found at 8:34 o'clock yesterday morning
by R. S. Watson, manager of the ice cream factory and milk station,
when he went to Johnson's rooms above the plant to see why he had not
come down to his office at the usual hour. The door was closed but not
locked. Watson pushed in and found the room filled with gas. Johnson,
partially undressed, was lying on the bed and appeared to have been
dead for several hours. Watson notified Deputy Sheriff L. H. Furen who
conducted an investigation while Justice of Peace Roy Lamberton
assembled a coroner's jury. After questioning employes of the ice cream
plant and investigating the circumstances, the coroner's jury found
that "Johnson came to his death during the night from asphyxiation from
fumes of a gas heater." Members of the coroner's jury said there was no
evidence that Johnson might have taken his own life and they were
individually of the opinion that death was accidental. Members of the
coroner's jury were L. M. Stroup, W. C. Davis, J. F. Futral, B. C.
Fowler, J. A. Horton and G. F. Richards. Watson said that when he last
saw Johnson the night before, he was reading in bed. It appeared from
the testimony that Johnson always slept with the doors and windows of
his room closed because he was susceptible to colds. Mr. Lamberton
found a paper of matches near the gas radiator. One match had been
taken out and used. It was the opinion of the justice of peace that
Johnson had lighted the radiator and that it had gone out from lack of
pressure or some other reason. Johnson came to Fort Myers in 1924 and
established the Lee County ice Cream company and milk depot a year
later. He is understood to have owned a half interest in the business,
stock also being held by a group of Miami businessmen. W. L. Boyer of
Miami arrived yesterday to look after the interests of the J. C. Perino
Engineering company which has stock in the company here and is also
interested in the Palm City Ice company. After the coroner's jury
adjourned, the body was taken to the Engelhardt funeral home and
Johnson's wife, Mrs. Daisy Johnson of Eustis was notified. She arrived
last night with her daughter, Miss Marion Johnson. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson
had not lived together for several years but were not divorced. Mrs.
Johnson will take the body back to Eustis for burial.

Sarasota
Herald-Tribune, January 19, 1996 - Section:
Local/State Page: 8B - Effie Joiner known as Island's Grandma
- When Effie M. Joiner
died this week she left 99 survivors: three sons, 21 grandchildren, 45
great-grandchildren and 30 great-great-grandchildren. A lifelong
Gasparilla Island resident, Joiner died January 16, 1996, 10 days
before her 96th birthday. She was known as Grandma to everybody on the
whole island, said her granddaughter, Donna Stibbins. She baby-sat for
people....her whole life. Born January 26, 1900, in Palma Sola,
Joiner's family moved to Gasparilla Island when she was an infant. When
she was 13 she married island fisherman Samuel J. Joiner. They lived on
the island's north end, and Effie had their first child three years
later, at age 16. That was in 1916, before the island had electricity
or indoor plumbing, and long before there was a bridge to the mainland.
They had seven children, and Effie also baby-sat for the islanders'

Palm Beach Post,
July 14, 2010 -
Johnny Jones remembered as stubborn advocate
for the environment dies. Johnny Jones, a plumber turned
environmentalist who spearheaded the
Kissimmee River restoration, helped establish the Big Cypress National
Preserve and championed the Everglades, is remembered by heavyweights
of Florida's environmental movement as a stubborn, well-connected man
who could get legislation passed in Tallahassee.
Mr. Jones, a hunter and fisherman, didn't like what Florida's explosive
growth was doing to the woods, water and wildlife. He used his
connections to build political support for major environmental causes.
Johnny was clearly one of the most important if not monumental figures
of the environmental movement in Florida," said Charles Lee, director
of advocacy for Florida Audubon. " When Johnny called his hunting clubs
and told them to start calling their legislators, they did."Mr. Jones,
called "a bulldog" by former Gov. and Sen. Bob Graham, worked on
Everglades legislation with many better-known environmentalists,
including the late Art Marshall and Marjory Stoneman Douglas, author of
The Everglades: River of Grass.Mr. Jones persuaded Graham that he had
to do more for the Everglades, leading the former governor to launch
the Save the Everglades program.Mr. Jones died at Good Samaritan
Medical Center Sunday night with his wife, Mariana, by his side. He was
77.Since the late 1980s, Mr. Jones has suffered from heart problems,
kidney cancer and crushed vertebrae from a car wreck. He was taken to
the hospital in late June when his blood pressure spiked.
John Clark Jones never finished high school. He became the first
full-time executive director for the Florida Wildlife Federation in
1971, a position he held until 1986. With his wife backing him up,
Jones is credited with pushing through dozens of environmental
bills."Probably the No. 1 thing in his life was getting the Kissimmee
River restored," Mariana Jones said. He drafted the river restoration
bill at his home in West Palm Beach with Marshall and got it passed in
1976. It took another 18 years before the first shovel full of dirt was
tossed into the stick-straight canal, but Jones lived long enough to
see sections of the meandering old Kissimmee restored. He spearheaded
legislation that created the Conservation and Recreational Lands of
Florida Act (CARL) and the worked on precursors to the Florida Forever
land-buying program that preserves environmentally significant
lands.Mr. Jones met his future wife at Conniston Junior High School.
The couple married in May 1949. He was 16; she was 15.While they were
dating, Jones and his wife-to-be fished on the Kissimmee River with her
father, Dave Beebe, leading to his passion for restoring the
Kissimmee.Mr. Jones worked in his family's plumbing business while he
and Mariana built their home, by hand, on what was an out-of-town lot
on Haverhill Road in the 1950s."We used to sit here and shoot skeet on
our patio," Mariana Jones said.Their children recall a milk delivery
man who refused to come back to the house because a panther scared him
away."We had a snake almost every day," daughter Diane Geans said.
"Mostly rattlesnakes and moccasins."Seeing the westward march of
development in Palm Beach County, Mr. Jones became involved in
environmental causes. He fought for more natural water patterns in the
Everglades, a problem he witnessed firsthand when he worked with other
hunters to rescue white-tailed deer whose grazing grounds were
flooded.Mr. Jones became president of the former Wildlife Conservation
League of Palm Beach County. He demonstrated his tenacity early on when
he pushed the former Florida Game & Fresh Water Fish Commission
to remove cattle from the J.W. Corbett Wildlife Management Area.In
2002, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission
honored Mr. Jones and his wife by naming public land for them. The
12,415-acre John C. and Mariana Jones/Hungryland Wildlife and
Environmental Area is in northern Palm Beach and southern Martin
counties. As Jones liked it, hunting is allowed there. In addition to
his wife, Mr. Jones is survived by daughters Julie Pate and Diane Geans
; son John Jones Jr. ; as well as six grandchildren and four great
grandchildren.A viewing is set for noon to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, followed
by funeral services at Dorsey-E. Earl Smith Memory Gardens Funeral
Home, 3041 Kirk Road, Lake Worth.

Myers passed
away November 9, 2006. Justin was a graduate of Fort Myers High School,
class of 1996. He was preceded in death by his father Casey J. Jones.
Left to cherish his memory is his fiance Amber Martel, sister Skye
Olsen, brother Landon Olsen, uncle Dan Jones and a countless number of
friends. Justin was loved by everyone who knew him and was a wonderful
role model for his younger brother and sister. Justin's self-made
success made his family and friends extremely proud. "It is not very
common to find someone that hasn't made some bad decisions or mistakes
in their lives, this is unfortunately the trials and tribulations of
growing up and maturing. It is my belief that what you do to amend your
mistakes is what should be used in judging your personal character.
Justin is hard-working and highly committed to his career. As a friend,
Justin is a standout. He is a loyal, honest, considerate, selfless and
supportive individual who has the ability to see and understand things
from another person's perspective. Outgoing, and always willing to help
somebody out, Justin is a very well-liked person with many close
friends." Beloved friend, Brian Scott. To honor and celebrate his life,
