FORT MYERS NEWS-PRESS, Sept. 26, 1939 - Charles Keen, 69-year-old carpenter, shot and killed his sister-in-law, Mrs. Annie Lou Randall, 32, and then ended his own life yesterday morning at his home at Buckingham. A son, Andrew Keen, was an eye-witness. Young Keen told a coroner's jury that his father and Mrs. Randall had been intimate for some two years. He said that his father came home from work during the morning, found he and Mrs. Randall alone together, got a pistol from his bedroom, fired four shots into the woman and then shot himself through the heart. Mrs. Randall and her husband, George Randall, had spent the preceding night at the Keen home where they were frequent visitors. Randall, a grove hand, had taken Keen to Fort Myers that morning where he was employed on a carpentering job in Dean Park. Young Keen gave no explanation for the shooting. He said that after firing two shots into the woman his father asked her, "now will you stop?" He said he did not know what his father meant. "My father came home around 11 o'clock," said Andrew, who wept openly throughout his story, "he was not feeling well. He went into his bedroom and got his .32 caliber pistol out from under the pillow. I thought nothing of it because he often carried his gun with him. "He had been drinking - I smelled beer on his breath. He got his suitcase from under the bed and tried to unlock it. I pulled out my key and told him it would open the lock better. He said, 'don't bother me now, son.' "He took out his pocketknife and cut the suitcase open. He got out a new shirt and tore the sleeve in jerking out the pins. He put on the shirt, told me he would be back later and walked out on the porch where Mrs. Randall was sititng. I walked to the back porch to comb my hair. "I heard two shots and heard my father say, 'now will you quit?' I don't know what he was talking about. He shot twice more. I started to jump him as he shot himself and fell on his hands and knees." Deputy Sheriff L. H. Furen said that when he arrived about half an hour later Mrs. Randall was slumped in the rocking chair and Keen was sprawled on the floor. Young Keen had summoned Furen by telephone from the McLaughlin dairy. Dr. Baker Whisnant, who examined the bodies, said the woman was shot twice through the heart and Keen once through the heart. Both died almost instantly. Nobody knew where the other two bullets went. Services will be held at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon at the Buckingham Cemetery for Mrs. Randall with the Rev. C. L. Crider officiating. Arrangements are in charge of Spooner and Engelhardt. Besides her husband she is survived by her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Green; seven sisters, Mrs. L. H. Fort Myers News-Press 23 Oct 2007 Hilbert V. Kiesel of Fort Myers, FL left us to join Our Lord on October 21, 2007, he was 90 years of age. The son of Charles and Lillian Kiesel, he was born in New York State and moved to Fort Myers in 1950. He, his brothers, and extended family members became pioneers in the fledgling shrimp business at Fort Myers Beach. By the end of his working career he had shrimp boats and associated businesses at Fort Myers Beach, FL, Biloxi, MS and Aransas Pass, TX.Hilbert retired and continued his love of the water, travel and helping others by joining the Royal Palm Yacht Club. During this time he was Fleet Captain for many years. He directed and led many cruises for the Club. Each year he and Dorothy would host the annual, never to be forgotten, "Kiesel Shack Party". During his "watch" the "Atta Boy" award was established, and is his in perpetuity. This award is given annually to the Captain in the Club, who has done the most to help other boaters.A founding member of Saint Cecilia's Catholic Church, Hilbert has passed the legacy of his faith to the fourth generation of his family. He now proudly watches his grandchildren and great-grandchildren attend masses. Hilbert and his wife, Dorothy, received communion several times a week and prayed together daily. He and his brothers were Charter members and now lifetime honorary members of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years. Hilbert felt privileged to attend his son, Hilbert D. Kiesel's initiation into the 4th Degree. A sportsman and hunter all his life he is an honorary lifetime member of the South Shore Marlin and Tuna Club and the Babylon Tuna Club. Hilbert has hunted and fished with his sons and grandchildren all over this country, the Bahamian and Pacific waters, and is a world class record holder in some categories. Since age 60 he has enjoyed many trips as a certified PADI diver.During World War II Hilbert proudly served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member to the crew of the USS Benjamin Franklin "the ship that wouldn't die". While aboard it was bombed by Japanese aircraft, split in half, and towed to shore in two pieces. Since that time he has been a proud member of the "Survivors of the Franklin". I quote from Dad, "damaged by a Kamikaze in October 1944 and by bombs in March 1945, "Big Ben" paid the highest price in lives among those lost on carriers in WWII. She is primarily remembered for the heroism of her crew in saving the lives of shipmates." Following the "Big One", Dad became a member of the VFW and American Legion.A familiar figure at many of the area sports fields he proudly followed the progress of his 7 grandchildren as they made their mark on many of the various teams at Bishop Verot and Fort Myers High Schools. During the last 10 years of his daughter, Dorothy's teaching career, Hilbert was "Grandpa Kiesel" to her students. While volunteering in her classroom he would read and tell stories, listen to the children read and spend individual time with some. The classes all looked forward to Grandpa's visits. He often brought treats and on Earth Day brought each child a Norfolk Pine to take home and plant.Leaving behind to cherish his memory are his three children, Dorothy Lillian Kiesel Poll (George) of Fort Myers, FL and Franklin, NC, Hilbert D. Kiesel (Alene) of Franklin, NC and Thomas F. Kiesel (Ruth) of Fort Myers, FL. Grandchildren, Kristen O'Halloran (Sean), Conrad F. Kiesel, Hillary Kiesel, Jarrett Kiesel (Kim) and Shannon Dorsey (David). Six great-grandchildren whom have brought an inordinate amount of joy into his life. Brother, Charles "Scoop" Kiesel (Lenora), sister, Lillian Wang, sisters in law, Joan Kiesel, Cecilia Kiesel, Linn Rohl, Ann Rohl and many nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Julia Woolbright, longtime friend, companion and caregiver. Dad's caregiver Kashima Alexander showed her love and concern in many ways. Hope Hospice and their wonderful staff will always be in our thoughts and prayers. Their help and caring attitudes were invaluable to the family.Hilbert is now in the presence of his beloved wife of 68 years, Dorothy; brothers, Donald Kiesel, George Kiesel, brothers-in-law, Ted Wang, Henry Rohl and the Honorable Kenneth Rohl all of whom preceded him into Heaven.Arrangements to be made by Harvey-Engelhardt-Metz Funeral Home.Due to our appreciation for the overwhelming response of compassion and sympathy extended towards the family at the recent passing of our Mother, Dorothy Elizabeth Kiesel, the services for our father will be private. We know they will be in the thoughts and prayers of many. Those who wish to honor Dad's memory may make donations to Hope Hospice, 9470 Healthpark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908.A fitting epitaph to our Dad would be, "A Parable to Immortality" by Henry VanDyke."I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sail to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says, "There she goes!" Gone where? Gone from my sight? that is all. She is just as large in mast and spar as she was when she left my side and just as able to bear her load of living freight to destination. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at the moment when someone at my side says, "There she goes!" There are other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

FORT MYERS NEWS-PRESS, July 12, 1932 Capt. G. F. Kinzie Dies; Sudden Heart Attack is Fatal to Pioneer Stricken After Recovering From Illness Ten Days Ago Capt. George Frederick Kinzie, 57 years old, a resident of Fort Myers for 45 years and one of three brothers who organized the boat line bearing their name, died suddenly yesterday at his home on Fowler Street. Death came as a severe shock to his family and friends as he was believed to be recovering from an attack suffered 10 days ago. Capt. Kinzie was one of the city's best-known pioneer residents. He had seen the community grow from a small settlement on the banks of the Caloosahatchee to a thriving city. He had played an important, though little publicized, part in its development. Death is Immediate. Death came instantaneously to the pioneer yesterday as he stood on the back porch of his home cleaning fish which he had intended to eat later in the day. Mrs. Kinzie, who was in the kitchen, heard her husband fall and rushed to his side. Efforts were made to revive him, and Dr. A. P. Hunter was called. He pronounced Mr. Kinzie dead when he reached the home and said death had been caused by a heart attack. Mrs. Kinzie was prostrated by the shock. Members of the family said last night she had regained her composure somewhat and would be able to attend the funeral this afternoon. The shock attending Capt. Kinzie's death was heightened as he had apparently pulled through the crisis following an attack 10 days ago. His condition was critical for a short time but he had recovered sufficiently in the last few days to be up and around the house. Sunday he attempted to walk in the yard, but went back into the house admitting he was much weaker than he thought. He had not complained, however, and apparently there had been so warning of the impending fatal attack. Born in Germany. Capt. Kinzie was born in Eulau, Germany, on Dec. 29, 1874. He came to Fort Myers in April, 1887, accompanying his two brothers, Andrew and Eric, and his mother, the family moving here immediately upon entering the United States. His father had preceded the family by a short time and had already chosen Fort Myers as their future home. Capt. Kinzie had lived here ever since concentrating his energy in the upbringing of the boat line which he and his brothers formed a few years after coming here. The boat line was organized with one small boat, known as the "Belle of Myers", which carried mail between Fort Myers and Punta Gorda before a railroad line had been established. After the railroad came, the boat line shifted its activities to the little keys off the coast of Lee County and started a service for passengers and mail delivery to Sanibel, Captiva and St. James. From a small beginning the boat line was steadily expanded until now three boats are used, one named "Belle of Myers" in memory of the original craft with which the company was started, and the other two, the "Dixie" and "Gladys", which carry passengers and mail to the island communities. Active in Boat Firm. Capt. Kinzie himself never lost touch with the problems of actual operation of the boats and frequently handled the helm when his brothers desired a vacation. He had been kept busy in recent years doing much of the office and executive work which the business required, but he never lost his love of the water which first sent him into the venture. Known throughout the county for his rugged honesty, once proved that confidence in his integrity had not been misplaced. It was largely through his efforts, coupled with those of the late R. A. Henderson, Sr., that depositors in the defunct Citizens Bank of East Fort Myers were enabled to receive 100 cents on the dolllar, although the strict letter of the law would not have required the steps he took to prevent loss to the bank's customers. Borrowed to Save Bank. Mr. Henderson and Capt. Kinzie between them raised $45,000 with which to pay off the depositors. Capt. Kinzie was forced to borrow his share of the amount contributed, and he sat in the conference at the bank for nearly the entire night while directors were discussing just what should be done. Little publicity was given to his action at the time, newspapers being requested not to publish more than a bare announcement. But the depositors knew where their money had come from and this one incident did more to strengthenf aith in Capt. Kinzie than any other thing he did for the community throughout his life. Capt. Kinzie owned considerable property here, which he accumulated during extensive trading in the "boom." His boat line was his first and principal interest, however, and, unlike many other business men, he did not relinquish the reins of leadership in that enterprise to enter the real estate business. He himself had practically entire charge of the tug "Belle of Myers," during the period the company was furnishing the city and county with most of the shell used in construction of the road system. Funeral This Afternoon. Andrew Kinzie was operating the boat yesterday when his brother died. E. E. Watson raced in his automobile to Punta Rassa to head off the boat before it started for the key communities and brought the grief-stricken brother back to Fort Myers. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the First Methodist Church, of which Capt. Kinzie had been a member for many years. The Rev. J. F. Bell will officiate, Pallbearers wil be Cy Q. Stewart, B. C. Foxworthy, J. B. Tarrer, Roy Cochran, Judge L. Y. Redwine and E. E. Watson. Burial will be in the Fort Myers Cemetery. In addition to his widow, Capt. Kinzie also is survived by two sons, George S. Kinzie and Norman Kinzie. Norman is attending the University of Florida at Gainesville where he is studying for the Episcopal ministry and had spent the weekend with his family here, leaving Sunday for Gainesville. He was informed of his father's death by telephone yesterday and returned to Fort Myers immediately. The Rev. William Stoney, Episcopal rector at the university accompanied Norman Kinzie to Fort Myers and will assist in the funeral service. L. W. Engelhardt and Sons have charge of funeral arrangements.

FORT MYERS NEWS-PRESS 2002-01-04 - LILA 'CONNIE' KUTZ (74) of 39 Abaco Street, Lehigh Acres, died January 1, 2002. She grew up in Felda, Florida, during the great depression, one of ten children, graduated from LaBelle High School at age 15 during World War II, and went to work at Buckingham Field. She later became a legal secretary, working in Fort Myers and Tampa, where she met and married her husband of 51 years, Jerry, and traveled the United States and Europe as a military wife. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Kutz; and thank you, Pop, for enabling Mom to stay home during these months of illness. Also, her five 'Air Force brats': Victor Kutz (Debbie) of Fort Myers, Debbie Moody (Jim) of Fort Myers Beach, Pat Davis (Rich) of Lehigh Acres, Stan Kutz (Sheryl) of Gainesville, Florida and Gene Kutz (Janet) of Alva; four grandchildren: Victor Kutz, Jr., Lucy Kutz, Jaime Kutz, and Joey Davis; two step-grandchildren: Chip Vealey (Kim) and their daughter, Devyn and Heather Burnett (Bobby) and her sons, Jordan and Austin; two brothers; George Fortson (Patty) and 'Willie' Fortson (Fay); and sister 'Toots' Fortson. Her greatest joys in life were her children and grandchildren. With them, she said 'I had it all'. And we loved her. She loved to read, sew, play word games, making guava jelly and 'picking black-eyed peas' at the old family homestead in Felda. She and her grandchildren were lifelong Scrabble players, and our greatest thrill was when we could finally 'beat Ma' at Scrabble. It didn't happen often. She also loved quilt making. Every relative and friend became recipients of her quilt. She requested no funeral service. She didn't want people grieving too much for her, but preferred they wrap up in one of her quilts and have warm memories of her. A private tree planting will be held in her memory at the old family homestead. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association. Lee Memorial Park .
