Fort Myers News-Press 2004-10-14 Barbara Downing Uhlar, 73, formerly of Pine Island, FL passed away Sunday in a nursing home in Westfield, MA, where she had lived since her husband Mike passed away in 1996. She moved there to be near her daughter, Arden and her family. Barbara was born and raised in Hawaii., surviving Pearl Harbor. She moved to Ft. Myers at the age of 14, then to Pine Island, where she had lived most of her adult life. Barbara worked for the Lee County School District for many years, before being stricken with Alzheimer's in 1989. Barbara leaves behind her five children; Tim, David, Gary, Jeff all who reside in Florida and her daughter, Arden who lives in Massachusetts. Barbara leaves 7 grandchildren, Eileen, John Michael, Christopher, Nichole, Bryant, Kristina and Brandon, and a brother, George in Hawaii. She will be buried next to her husband, Michael Uhlar, Jr. Visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004 from 6-8 PM in the chapel of Coral Ridge Funeral Home. The funeral mass will be at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Ft. Myers on Friday at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow in Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family asks that instead of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Barbara.

Fort Myers News-Press, 5 Dec 2007 -- John Uhlar Sr., 94, of St. James City, passed away Sunday, December 2, 2007. A native of Pine Island, John was a commercial fisherman and farmer who proudly served in the US Navy in the South Pacific during WWII.He is survived by his 2 loving sisters Martha Brown of Marblehead, MA and Ann Carey of Pine Island; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews which include Tim (Marty), David (Roberta), Gary (Renee), Jeff (Sharon), Arden (David) D'AMours, Glen Carey and Gale (Chuck) Carey-Clark. John is preceded in death by his wife Estelle Downing; son John Jr.; parents Katie and Michael; 3 sisters Mary, Katie Gillis and Helen; 2 brothers Joseph and Michael Jr. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2007 at the chapel of Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home and Cemetery between the hours of 4 PM and 7 PM. A visitation will also follow on Friday from 10 AM until 11 AM with service with military honors and burial to follow.

Fort Myers News-Press , 30 Nov 2007 - Burl A. Underhill Sr., 84, former Police Chief, Councilman, and Mayor of the City of Fort Myers, ascended into Heaven November 17, 2007. His life reflects the values of the American Spirit and exemplifies what determination, hard work and a little luck can accomplish. Born into a family of simple means, his father Milton A. Underhill and mother Arcie Corbett Underhill, pioneer settlers near Weaver's Corner, N. Fort Myers, FL, carved out a meager existence from their orange grove. He was the youngest of five children, attended Fort Myers High School until the eleventh grade before being called into the service of our country during WWII. He served as a coxswain in the Navy as well as the shore patrol and was honorably discharged at the end of the war. After returning to Fort Myers, he worked in the gladiolus, and painting industries while completing his high school requirements before being called into public service as a police officer. He worked as a patrolman, briefly walking a beat in downtown Fort Myers before an opportunity arose to become Chief of Police. At age 28, he became Florida's youngest Police Chief and faithfully served his community for over 25 years, including 23 years as Chief. During his span as Chief of Police, Burl graduated from the FBI National Academy in Washington, D.C., became a President of the Florida Police Chiefs Association, and modernized the police department before retiring because of health concerns. But, he was not finished with public life. His service to Fort Myers continued with a term on the Fort Myers City Council and later served as Mayor of the City of Fort Myers. Always at his side was his wife of 61 years, Martha Ritch Underhill, whose family were also pioneer settlers of N. Fort Myers. She preceded him in death as did his brother Elam and sisters Alma, Evelyn, and Alpha. He is survived by his four children; Burl A. Underhill, Jr. (Tracy) of Lockhart, Texas, Dr. Timothy E. Underhill (Pam) of Fort Myers, FL, David A. Underhill and Tom Campbell of Clearwater, FL and Debra E. d'Antignac (Jack) of Darien, GA; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

THE FORT MYERS PRESS, Sept. 16, 1929--Jerry Underhill, 35, is dead, and Lee Young lies in the Lee County Memorial hospital with a wounded hand as the result of a shooting duel which occurred at the Underhill home on the Pine Island road, near matlacha Pass at 11 p.m. yesterday...The argument commenced over Underhill's wife, a young girl of 19, according to the story as told by the witnesses. She is the third wife of the man, and is reported to have desired a separation from him for some time...Underhill is survived by his wife and four children, Clyde, Julius, Emory and Russel; four brothers, Tom, Berry, Malkum and Milton; three sisters, Bessie, Ollie and Donnie; and by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Underhill. Funeral services will be held at Fort Denaud at 5 p.m. today, and burial will be in the Fort Denaud cemetery, with Rev. O. O. Roberts of Bowling Green, officiating.

Fort Myers News-Press Feb 5, 2004 Martha Janet Ritch Underhill, age 79, a lifelong resident of Ft Myers, FL, passed away on February 2, 2004 at Belleair Bluffs, FL after an extended illness. She attended Ft Myers Senior High School (1942) and was a charter member of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Burl A Underhill, Sr., former Chief of Police and Mayor of the City of Ft Myers, 2 sisters, Betty Ruth Welborn (FMHS 1947) of Clermont, FL and Hettie Luttrell of Dundee, KY; 4 children; Burl A Underhill, Jr (Tracey) of Lockhart, TX, Dr Timothy Underhill (Pam) of Ft Myers, FL and Debi d'Antignac (Jack) of Crescent, GA, David Underhill and Tom Campbell of Clearwater, FL; 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either Hope Hospice or American Red Cross Blood Bank.

Fort Myers News-Press, Jan 27, 2005 - T. Fred Underwood, 73, of Ft. Myers died Monday January 24, 2005. He was a native of Arcadia, FL. he was an Architect and a graduate of the University of Florida, and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He touched many lives and was loved and respected by all who knew him. A very active lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Ft. Myers where he served as a deacon, Bible class teacher and Chairman for numerous committees. Fred was also a member of the Rotary Club of Ft. Myers. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and a member of the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his wife of 49 1/2 years Winnie A. Underwood, and is the proud father of Debra (Tom) Minto of Columbus, OH; Sandra (Rick) Chojnacki, Milwaukee, WS; David (Susan) Underwood, Jefferson City, TN; Jeffrey (Linda) Underwood, Bradley Underwood both of Orlando, and Gregory Underwood of Charlotte, NC, a sister Jacquelyn (Ralph) Hauser of Ft. Myers; 5 grandchildren Joshua and Zachary Minto; Danielle, Ben and Hannah Chojnacki and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held 11:00 AM Friday at the First Baptist Church of Ft. Myers with Dr. Winford . Hendrix officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Ft. Myers, 1735 Jackson St., Ft. Myers, FL 33901.

Fort Myers News-Press Oct 3, 2005 Alexander Karl Ungar, Jr., age 56, of Fort Myers, passed away September 30, 2005 in Fort Myers. He was born Oct. 1, 1948 in Nuremberg, Germany to Alexander Karl Ungar Sr. and Hildegard H. Espey Ungar. He was a graduate of Fort Myers High School and attended Edison College. He was a sales associate and owner of his company, Downtown Associates Unlimited Inc., in the downtown Fort Myers area. Up until his illness, he was active the redevelopment of downtown Fort Myers. Survivors include his brother; Walter Ungar of Fort Myers and a companion and friend; Jo Ann Peeples of Fort Myers. Graveside funeral services will be Tuesday, October 4, 2005, 1100 AM at Ortona Cemetery, Ortona, FL with Pastor Bob Moore officiating. Visitation will start 1030 AM prior to the start of services. Arrangements by Akin-Davis Funeral Home-Fort Myers, Florida.
