HistoryThe Wakulla County Historical Society was founded in October, 1991 to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret the heritage of Wakulla County and the surrounding area. ObjectivesLong-range objectives of the Society are to establish and maintain a local history museum and to foster publications on local history. GovernanceThe Society is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of officers and directors elected at the Society’s Annual Meeting in October. Museum SiteWakulla County Commissioners have agreed to lease the Old Wakulla County Jail to the Society for the establishment of a museum. To date we have succeeded in obtaining grants to replace the roof and windows. These funds must be matched by Society funds. We will continue to seek grants and other funds to support the full renovation of the Old Jail/New Museum. FundingThe Society is a non-profit organization whose funding comes from grants, membership dues, gifts, memorials, and fund-raising events. Citizen ParticipationMost important to the Society is citizen support, through membership, gifts, and participation in our activities. Serving on committees, attending our fund-raisers, and making memorials or other donations are all ways to support the Society. Please contact us to see how you can help. ProjectsThe Society has many activities in which members can participate. We hope you will put your skills to work for us developing our Museum, maintaining and surveying cemeteries, documenting history in our community, and other activities. Special EventsSome of the community events in which we participate are listed below. We take advantage of these opportunities to let people know about our organization and to raise funds through the sale of Society items -- publications, pens, note cards, mugs, etc. Please come to these events and visit our booth!
