Old Warrington Cemetery
There are 250 burials recorded: the earliest birth is 1776 and the earliest burial is 1832. This roster of burials was contributed by George L. Bernhardt, Jr. Please contact him if you have questions or have information about these burials.
The original cemetery was established in the 1830s upon the bluff overlooking the bay. It was divided into two parts and was surrounded by a wrought iron fence. One portion was for the whites and the other for the freedmen and slaves hired to help in the building of the Navy Yard and the three Army forts. These individuals lived in the villages of Warrington, Woolsey, and a tent city which also stood upon the bluff not far from the cemetery.
In the early 1930s the base was expanding its aviation arm and purchased the old town of Warrington. This resulted in the relocation of the Warrington Cemetery in 1934. 840 bodies were dug up and relocated, along with many of the original head stones. Most of the bodies were re-interred in what is now known as the Barrancas National Cemetery and the remainder went to the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Some others were moved to cemeteries of the familys
choice.
At first Barrancas and Warrington were separate, distinct, cemeteries but as Barrancas continued to expand, it finally encompassed the Warrington Cemetery. There are no signs identifying the cemetery; however it can be found in the approximate center of Barrancas where the largest collection of trees stand. It is outlined by a single row of small bushes that enclosed the entire cemetery. The iron fence that once stood is long gone. The cemetery is still active and contains many unused grave sites.
Directions to the Historic Marker are as follows: As you enter NAS stay on the right side, Duncan Road, all the way past the golf course to Taylor Road, the second stop light. Turn left and proceed to the next stop light. On the left stands the first Navy Bank and to the right is the Warrington Officer’s Quarters. As you turn right at the light, make a sharp s-turn into the housing area and in the yard of Quarters #12 stand two blue and yellow sign giving the history of the Old Warrington Cemetery.
To go to the Barrancas National Cemetery, proceed through the stop light at Taylor Road and the cemetery is on the right. Stay to the right as Duncan Road divides and then a right onto Hovey Road. Continue through the entrance way until you reach where the road makes a circle and the Old Warrington Cemetery lies on the right.
