The history of the Escambia County, Florida GenWeb (FLGenWeb) began with Rootsweb and Ms. Virginia "Ginny" Deagan, a longstanding member and volunteer of WFGS serving as Webmaster and County Coordinator for more than 10 years. During 2008-2009, the FLGenWeb incorporated when Ancestry.com purchased Rootsweb and the GenWeb Projects under it. In May 2010, a wrongful action was taken by the USGenWeb when it chose to de-link the FLGenWeb, Inc., and generate its own FLGenWeb. Some Florida projects and counties moved with the USGenWeb's newly formed FLGenWeb and others stayed with the FLGenWeb, Inc. The West Florida Genealogical Society (WFGS) website seemed the logical place to shelter Escambia County since the contents were overwhelmingly contributed by members and other volunteers of the Society. Escambia County chooses to remain associated with the FLGenWeb, Inc., but retains copyright and ownership of the site and its contents.

I continue to solicit your contributions, comments and suggestions. WFGS, along with its members and other volunteers, continue to be dedicated to helping researchers of Escambia County, Florida and the surrounding area known as West Florida.

Since I am not a research specialist, I regret that I am unable to give you personal assistance in your research; however, I may be able to point you in the right direction! I sincerely wish you happy hunting within these pages that are made possible by so many diligent volunteer contributors!
