These are random lists of obituaries and/or articles found in local newspapers. The obituaries cited range from 1826 to late November 1998. The list, obviously, is very incomplete, but covers mainly the following:
Daily News: Mar 1889 & 1890 - Dec 1889 & 1890; Jan-Mar & Jul-Dec 1891; and all of 1892.
Pensacola Journal: Jan - Aug & Oct - Dec 1954; and some of Jan 1955. There are some intermittent dates between 1955 and 1983; all of 1984 - 1986; intermittent dates between 1987 and mid-1997; and then complete until late Nov 1998.
For brevity, the following symbols were used in the listings:
"+" = "and later dates" (widely separated dates are shown as example: 2/09/Sep 1998"
"A" = an article found elsewhere in the paper: "AA" = articles on succeeding days.
"I" = a small item found elsewhere in the paper
"VS" = vital statistic column and contains only name, age and race. (found in early papers)
"F" = small "For the Record" found in later papers. (Usually omitted if larger obit found)
"*" = burial from a known minority funeral home and has no other implications
C/, S/, D/ or >C/ means child of, son of, etc.
If you find a complex set of symbols, several days should be searched after the initial date given.
For a more comprehensive listing of obituaries from 1984 - 1998, please refer to Mr. Ed Lakes compilation found at the reference desk of the Pensacola Public Library.
Thanks to Susan Barnes, who began the alphabetization of these lists and who indexed the early listings and also did the editing until family duties caused her to cease her contributions. Also, thanks to Mary Pokrant, who contributed much random information and who did a great amount of typing.
Thanks also to Mr. Ed Lake, who graciously consented to allow us to use his large amount of work. Lastly, thanks to Ginny Deagan for formatting the information for the Escambia County FLGenWeb page.
