Rev. Charlie E. Sneed

Rev. Charlie E. Sneed of Ocilla died Sunday, August 28, 2005 at his residence. He was 87. Charlie Sneed was born April 1, 1918 in Irwin County to James and Eula Mae Sneed. He was educated in Irwin County schools.

 

At an early age he joined Mathis Chapel Baptist Church where he began his ministry and was licensed under the leadership of Rev. B. J.Drummond. During his 50-plus years in the ministry, he served as pastor to the following churches: Meadows Chapel Baptist (Irwin County), Mt. Calvary Dorminy’s Mill, Laurens Hill  (Dublin), Antioch (Fitzgerald), Old Corinth (Americus) and Ebenezer (Chauncey). He was pastoring Traveler’s Rest (Tifton) and Macedonia (Wray) at the time of his death.
 

During his lifetime he worked as a farmer; however, he was well known in the community as an employee of Dill’s Ocilla Grocery Company, currently known as J. H. Harvey’s. He touched many lives during his 34-year period of employment there. Rev. Sneed  was married to the late Evelyn Smith Sneed in 1937 until her death in 1976. To this union, 10 children were born; two of which, Charlie Jr. and Charlie Mae, preceded him in death.
 

On December 21, 1977 he married Mildred Wilcox. To this union, two children were born. Amy Clarice preceded him in death. Survivors include 31 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, seven brothers-in-law, 12 sisters-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
 

He lived a long and fruitful life of caring, sharing, loving and friendship toward his fellowman. Rev. Sneed would often say, “I don’t want to rust out, I want to wear out!” This he did when he preached his last sermon and departed this life on August 28, 2005. Services were held at Ocilla Church of God on Saturday, September 3 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Stanford Anderson officiating. Music was provided by the choir and soloists, .Pallbearers were deacons of Traveler’s Rest Baptist Church. Interment was held in Ocilla City Cemetery. Henderson Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
