This is Ethel Pauline Bullard's Baxley High School (now Appling HS) diploma of June 1917. She was the only female in her class. After graduating BHS, she began teaching elementary school, as was the custom for HS graduates in rural Georgia at the time. The HS diploma was the only teaching certificate required for an elemetary school teacher. Her future husband, Nicholls Edward Carter, was drafted into the Army in the first draft of WWI. After WWI, they settled in Douglas, Coffee County, running a barber shop and beauty salon until Nicholls death in 1939.
