CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS - 26TH GEORGIA REGIMENT Company “D” - Seaboard Guards MADE UP OF MEN FROM CAMDEN & WAYNE COUNTIES, GA. Portions of Geographical Area Now in Brantley County |
|
The Civil War was fought long before the birth of Brantley County in 1920, but many of our ancestors were involved in that devastating event. The realignment of land from neighboring counties to Brantley did not reduce the pain and agony suffered by those confederate soldiers. Pain continues to live in the hearts of their descendants. Brantley County lands were realigned from Charlton, Pierce, and Wayne Counties. Wayne and Pierce Counties contributed the largest geographical area, as well as population. Earlier in history, some portions of Camden had been realigned to establish Charlton as well as Wayne Counties, and subsequently to the new Brantley County. The homes of a great number of C.S.A. soldiers were located in the geographical area now known as Brantley County. The names these soldiers are published below. We are unable to identify all Brantley Co. soldiers, but perhaps you can! The 26th Ga. Regiment was under the command of General Robert E. Lee during the Civil War. They were fighting the battles of Northern Virginia while Sherman was marching through Georgia. Noticeable in the following resumes of Confederate Veterans is that some soldiers had activities at places other than Northern Virginia. We don’t have answers for those situations, except that perhaps they had been reassigned, or else had resigned and reenlisted in other Georgia Regiments. Researchers should be reminded that Companies of the 26th Georgia Regiment were heavily involved in battle skirmishes throughout their 3 ½ year campaign in Northern Virginia. Surviving the natural elements of Virginia, as well as fierce battles with federal troops was number one priority. Maintenance of Company records took a distant, less, priority. In addition, numerous records and accounts were destroyed through the natural evolution of events. ALDRIDGE, John - Private July 29, 1861. Deserted and surrendered to enemy at Charles Town, W. Va.
