He lived just inside of Ware County, enlisting on September 22, 1862 in company A, 24th Batt. Georgia Calvary at Waynesville, Ga. The 24th Batt Georgia Calvary became part of the 7th Regiment Georgia Calvary by S.O. dated 13 Feb. 1864; promoted to Corporal on the muster roll 30 Apr 1864, and to First Corporal 27 Apr, 1864; listed on roll, 31 Oct 1864, he was absent in the hands of the enemy 11 June 1864. He was captured in Virginia at the Louisa County Courthouse 11 June 1864, and was imprisoned at the Union's worst prison at Elmira, New York which was known as Hellmira by those imprisoned there.
