William Riley Herrin

William Riley Herrin enlisted into the Confederate Army on April 27, 1862 as a Private in Company " K" (Captain Clinch's) Georgia Cavalry. Later he went into Co. A 4th (Clinch's Georgia Cavalry) as a Sergeant.

 

He and six other brothers served in "The War Between the States" (James H., John D., Henry Levi, Owen, Aaron, and Herrin "Jeff").

 

William was present through May and June 1864. He was captured as a Prisoner of War, paroled at Thomasville, GA May 25, 1865.

 

William Riley Herrin was born May 10, 1834 to Daniel Herrin and Mehala Kelly in Wayne County. William died May 22, 1915. William m. Emma Malissa "Emmie" Sophia Delispine February 1, 1855. She was born August 6, 1839 d. July 23, 1921. William and Emma are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Brantley County.

 

Children of William and Emma are:

 

1) Mary Jane Herrin, b. March 15, 1856 d. February 19, 1901 buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.

 

2) Julian Jemima "Julia," b. Jan 25, 1856. She married 1st Rev. Elias S. Strickland on August 16, 1875. Elias was the son of Levi J. and Mary Ann (Lee) Strickland. Her 2nd marriage was to Joseph Texas Davis, son of Neal and Emeline (Townsend) Davis.

 

3) Wade Hampton, born 30 Mar 1860 Wayne County, Georgia.

 

4) William Henry Herrin Sr., b. December 22, 1862 d. January 13, 1952. m. Eulalia "LaLa" Collins Highsmith b. January 28, 1868 Wayne County.

 

5) Malvina E., born abt. 1865 Wayne County, Georgia.

 

6) Emma Melissa Herrin, b. January 26, 1866 d. January 5, 1931 m. Benjamin Franklin Jones, Elder b. March 15, 1859 d. July 22, 1944. Emmie and Elder Jones are buried in Smyrna Cemetery.

 

7) Ardelia Herrin, b. April 2, 1867 d. November 11, 1944 m. Edward Griffin son of James Griffin and Georgia Jones. Edward was b. September 24, 1868 d. October 26, 1955. Ardelia and Edward are buried in High Bluff Cemetery.

 

8) Arcanah Oceanna "Ocie" Herrin, b. January 6, 1869, d. March 3, 1941. m. Jared Johnson in 1893.

 

9) Frances V. "Fannie" Herrin, b. December 4, 1870 d. October 31, 1960 m. Jasper Dilworth Highsmith son of John Highsmith and Nancy Jones. Jasper was b. July 15, 1870 d. June 11, 1944. Frances and Jasper are buried in New Hope Cemetery.

 

10) Joseph Silas Herrin, b. April 9, 1872.

 

11) James Lawson "Yellow Jim" Herrin, February 24, 1874 d. January 25, 1951, m. Martha Jane Lewis March 1, 1903 daughter of Millard Lewis and Sarah Dixon. Martha was b. December 22, 1878 d. May 12, 1943. Jim and Martha are buried in Oak Grove Cemetery.

 

12) Daniel Jefferson Herrin, b. abt. 1875.

 

13) Nora Bell Herrin, b. April 21, 1879 d. October 30, 1915, m. Tolbert "Tollie" Courson son of James Courson and Mary Highsmith. Tolbert was b. November 25, 1872 d. February 6, 1911. Nora Bell and Tolbert are buried in New Hope Cemetery.

 

Military record was researched by Gaynell H. Sasser and a grave stone was ordered on May 26, 2004, and was installed by Jerry Van Herrin on July 29, 2004.
