HISTORY OF KNOX
CEMETERY, LULATON, GEORGIA
In the early-mid 1800s an early
pioneer of this area, Reddick Knox owned a vast acreage of land west of
the Satilla River basin, near Lulaton, Georgia. At his death, Reddick Knox was buried at a location, later to
become known as Knox Cemetery. He was born
1790 and died 1858. His
wife, Ruhama Taylor Knox, born in 1791, died 1870, was also
buried at the same location.
As other members of the family and neighbors passed away, the
family burial plot continued to grow creating a cemetery named in honor
of its initial owner, Reddick Knox.
Later in years a descendant of
Reddick Knox married a Courson, and ownership of the land was passed to
Ms. Pearl M. Courson. Ms
Pearl sold the land in 1937 to Brunswick Pulp and Paper Company,
excepting out two acres for Knox Cemetery.
No deed could be found identifying current ownership, but Knox
Cemetery is recorded in the Brantley County Courthouse.
The
source of this information is attributed to the daughter of Gaynell
Highsmith Sasser, Angela Keene. Angela researched this information about 15 years ago
(1985-1986) while working in the Brantley County Tax Assessor’s
Office. Gaynell is a
descendant of Reddick Knox through her father, Henry Turner Highsmith.
His mother, was Ruhama “Hamie” Ann Knox; her father, Wiley
Knox was the son of Reddick Knox, patriarch of the Knox Clan in Brantley
County.
In
the year 2000, a committee headed by Gaynell Highsmith Sasser purchased
and installed a granite monument identifying Knox Cemetery in honor of Reddick Knox.
