WAYNESVILLE

Brantley County, Georgia

Named after Revolutionary War Hero, General "Mad" Anthony B.  Wayne, Waynesville is located near the old Post Road which is the dividing line between the counties of  Brantley and Glynn. In  early pioneer days Waynesville was a refuge for many weary stage coach traveler.  It  was also an in-land sanctuary for the coastal island plantation families.  There is no wonder that it was selected as the  first county site for Wayne County in 1829.

GRAVESITE OF MS. GOETNER MUMFORD PARKHURST, LOCATED AT ROCK CREEK CEMETERY, WASHINGTON D.C., TAKEN IN 1948.  PAYING TRIBUTE TO MS. PARKHURST ARE THE FIRST RECIPIENTS OF A MUMFORD SCHOLARSHIP.

(L-R), BETTY JEAN AMMONS (MCGUIRE), AGNES ELIZABETH JACOBS (JOHNS), AND REBA JEAN BENNETT (PYBURN). UNFORTUNATELY, THE NAME OF MS. PARKHURST IS NOT READABLE; FORTUNATELY WE RECOGNIZE THE FAINT IMAGES OF THE  THREE ATTRACTIVE RECIPIENTS OF THE MUMFORD SCHOLARSHIP.

COMMENTS by Betty Jean Ammon's McGuire: When the first Mumford scholarships were awarded in 1948, three students at Nahunta High School received them. These students were Betty Jean Ammons, Reba Jean Bennett and Agnes Jacobs. After graduation the class went on a class trip to Washington D.C..  While there, the three of us had a picture made standing behind a tombstone.   Agnes has confirmed my memory that it was the grave of Goetner Mumford Parkhurst, the lady who established the scholarship fund.  She is buried in Washington, not Waynesville.  Agnes said that other members of the family were buried at the Waynesville home. Betty J. Ammons McGuire.

WHO ARE THE OTHERS RECIPIENTS OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS? E-Mail me the names and year of award:  Thomas Earl Cleland,
