1810 - 1915

James A. Rowell
 

INDIAN WARS: James enlisted in Sweat's Company as a Private in 1839 and was separated in 1841.

 

CONFEDERATE ARMY: James A. Rowell enlisted into the Confederate Army in September 22, 1862 as a Private in 7th Georgia Cavalry, Company D.

 

James A. Rowell was born June 4, 1808 or 1810 in Camden County. His parents were James and Sarah Raulerson Rowell and grandfather was John Rowell, *RS*. James first marriage was to Temperance “Tempie” Dowling April 17, 1845, daughter of Jabez Lazarus and Honor Davis Dowling. Tempie was born January 14, 1830. James and Tempie’s children:

 

(1) David Reed Rowell *CSA,* born September 1, 1845, died 1915, married Louisiana “Lucy” Grooms September 25, 1867.

 

(2) Eliza Rebecca Rowell, born March 26, 1848, married Samuel B. Morgan October 26, 1875.

 

(3) Jabez James “Uncle Jabe” Rowell, born September 28, 1850, died June 23, 1929, married 1st Sarah Ann Jane Anthony, married 2nd Serena Ranie Ammons, and married 3rd Ellen McBee, April 21, 1908.

 

(4) Sophia Jane Rowell, born December 21, 1853, married Daniel Wilkinson.

 

(5) Jesse S. Rowell, born June 30, 1854, married Mary Jane Moody.

 

(6) Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Rowell, born April 11, 1856, married William Fiveash.

 

(7) Celestia Hester Ann Rowell, born June 9, 1858, died in 1898, married Isaac Benjamin “Ben” Lyons, June 10, 1875.

 

(8) John Darling Rowell, born May 18, 1860, married Drucilla Dowling.

 

(9) Tempy Adeline Rowell, born August 23, 1863, 1st married Silas C. Johns, 2nd married Lyman J. Wilcher.

 

(10) Martha Matilda, born Jan. 7, 1865, married Aaron Dowling.

 

(11) Frances Dorinda Rowell, born January 28, 1868, married James B. Harris.

 

(12) William Henry “Billy” Rowell, born June 24, 1870, married Claudia Moody Dec. 5, 1897.

 

(13) Rachel Keziah Rowell, born April 17, 1874, married James M. Jacobs, August 2, 1890.

 

After Tempie died, May 20, 1889, he married Susan A. Drury about 1889. She was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Harris Drury. Susan was born September 7, 1857.

 

James and Susan had 3 children:

 

(1) Mary Rowell, (twin), born August 13, 1890, married Osgood Drury.

 

(2) Martha (deceased) twin.

 

(3) Joseph Layton Rowell, born Feb. 7, 1893, married Lydia V. Crews.

 

 James died April 22, 1915 and Susan died in 1917. James, Susan, and Tempie are buried in Dowling Cemetery.

 

Military service was researched and a stone was bordered by Gaynell H. Sasser in November 22, 2004. Jerry Van Herrin and Linton Herrin placed the marker on January 19, 2005.
