James M. Strickland was born November 23, 1827, the son of John and Mercy (Martin) Strickland.  James was married to Elizabeth Hart.  James died on April 26, 1902, Both he and Elizabeth are buried in Thomas Cemetery.

James enlisted into the Confederate Army on August 9, 1861, as a Private in 1st Company I, 25th Georgia Volunteer Infantry.  He was separated from service on November 8, 1861, due to a hernia and other physical disabilities at Camp Wilson near Savannah.

Military service was researched and a stone was ordered by Gaynell H. Sasser on July 1, 2004, and was placed by Art Keene on September 20, 2004.
