The 1850 Federal Census for Campbell County Georgia was
enumerated by James Rainwater. He began the task on August 6,
and finished up on November 24. All in all he seems to have done
a good job. His hand writing was for the most part quite legible.
There are a few names which are still in question and may be
corrected later if more information on these families is found.
Of course there are numerous spelling errors which I thought
it best not to correct in order to preserve the integrity of
the document. Some Initials are hard to determine, such as I
and J. Some of the spellings are phonetic. Some names of the
same family are spelled differently. I did change first names
which were abbreviated to their complete spelling when known,
such as Jno to John, Jas to James, Wm to William etc. The second
column was supposed to have been used for the family number.
Sometimes more than one family lived in the same house. Apparently
Mr. Rainwater did not use it for that, since the number was the
same for columns one and two in all cases. I elected to use this
column for identifying the person within the household.
I have spent a lot of time on this. I believe it to be
a very accurate and complete transcription. However, I make mistakes
so check a photocopy or microfilm copy of the original document
if you have any doubt about any particular entry and decide for
your self if the person listed is yours. And as always, if you
find an error please advise me so I can correct it.
Legend:
Column 1: The Residence number in order of enumeration.
Column 2: The Person within the household in order of enumeration.
This column was intended to be for the family #.
but was not used for this.
Column 3: The Last name or Surname of the head of household and
other Surnames were listed.
Column 4: The First names and initials.
Column 5: The age.
Column 6: The sex.
Column 7: The Race if given. Only one entry was made in this
column on the entire document.
Column 8: The Occupation. Every male 16 or older seems to have
an entry here, but no females.
Column 9: The value of the estate.
Column 10: The place of birth.
Column 11: The date given on the particular page of the census.
Column 12: The combined information found in the last four columns
of the actual census, such as attended school, married within
the year etc.
Column 13: The page number of the Census book. Two faceing pages
in the ledger were given one page number, thus the reason for
A and B pages.
Column 14: The line number on the page. There were 42 lines per
page.
