* Who am I?
* Where did my family originate?
* Do I have ancestors from Georgia?
* Are medical problems prevalent in my family history?
* Where and how do I get started tracing my genealogy?
If you are seeking answers to questions like these,
you can benefit by joining Cobb County Genealogical Society, Inc.
Association
The Society provides a positive environment
for members to exchange information regarding genealogical research.
You can learn from other members experiences, and may even
find someone who is researching the same family as you. Our annual
membership roster includes the family surnames being researched
by each member. Members are encouraged to furnish their ancestor
charts which are published in the Family Tree Quarterly and filed
in the Georgia Room.
Education
The Society has eleven meetings a year with
topics such as: internet access, homestead records, British migration
patterns, Melungeons, funeral home records, analysis of probate
records, planning a family reunion, long distance research, planning
a research trip, D.A.R. records, military records, and orientation
to the LDS Family History Center. Members receive a monthly newsletter
eleven times a year with Society news, meeting notices, and Georgia
Room acquisition updates. ( The Georgia Room is the Cobb County
Central Library's repository dedicated to genealogical research
and Georgia History.) The Society sponsors advanced research seminars
featuring nationally prominent genealogists such as Helen Leary,
Elizabeth Shown Mills, Lloyd Bockstruck, James Hanson, and Craig
Roberts Scott. We also sponsor a beginner's class periodically.
Research
We have sponsored week-long research
trips to various locations including: North Carolina, Virginia,
South Carolina, National Genealogical Society Conferences, Ladson
Library in Vidalia, GA and the Washington Library in Macon, GA.
Publications and Records
The Family Tree Quarterly, published
and mailed to members in March, June, September and December, includes
articles of general interest plus specific records such as tax and
marriage rolls. Much of the information included in the Family Tree
Quarterly is not available by mail or at the Georgia State Archives.
For researchers with Cobb County ancestors, The Quarterly is an
excellent source of genealogical data. Members may submit up to
two queries per Family Tree Quarterly.
The Cobb County Genealogical
Society, Inc. exchanges the Family Tree Newsletter and the
Family Tree Quarterly with more than 100 other genealogical and
historical societies. These publications are available to the public
in the Georgia Room at the Cobb County Central Library in Marietta,
Georgia. The Society has also produced the publications listed in
this brochure. Cobb County has very limited records microfilmed
and available at the Georgia State Archives: marriage indexes, deeds,
and Georgia tax lists only. The annual membership in the Cobb County
Genealogical Society, Inc. costs the same as one out-of-state research
request to the Georgia State Archives.
The monthly Cobb County Genealogical Society,
Inc. meetings provide fun and camaraderie as well as opportunities
for education and research pertaining to family history.
Membership is only $30.00 a
year from January 1 through December 31.
See the Membership Application or contact
Connie Tibbetts, Membership
Director, for more information.
