Chatham County Censuses for 1850 depicts the family of Thomas E. SHAW, steamboat captain, age 29, born in GA,
His wife, Ann E., is 27, SC, daughter Lara [Laura] E., 27, born in GA,
William A., 5, GA; James B., age 6, born GA.
In the 1860 census, this family remains in Chatham County, without Thomas E. SHAW, and the family is residing with James G. CORNELL, believed to be the brother of Ann E. SHAW.
I am searching for any information on this family. William A. [possibly Alexander] may have relocated to Scott County, Arkansas by the 1880 census, and may have married a Ellen F. MITCHELL.
Any assistance will be appreciated.

I have found a letter dated 1883 APO Savannah and hope someone out there may recognize who may have written this letter as the last page is missing:
Dear Brother:
I write you these few lines to inform you that I received your kind letter of the 28th and was very glad to hear that you and your family were well as this leaves me and my family at present. I sent letter to Brother John sometime ago but never received an answer. I see from your letter that he received it. I cannot give you any particulars as to Frank's death. I wrote Jimmie, her son, to try and find out something. I got a letter from him but he never said anything about it. I suppose Harper would not let him. Harper was in town during the Centennial but never came by to see me or tell me anything about her death or sickness. We heard from Capt DAY's son that she had died of pneumonia. But I believe Frank freted herself to death. Harper has been drinking very hard for a long time. Frank left 5 children, the oldest girl Maud is with Capt DAY's wife. Jessie is with some lady at Lumber City but I canot find out who it is the boys Jimmie, Thomas and Ro bert are staying with at Lumber City. Their father is running on Capt Days' Boat. Lizzie died in confinement she left 2 children: Milo and Harry - they are in Augusta. I heard you were married but did not know how many children you had. I have been married since 1875 and have had six children. 5 Girls and 1 boy. I have not but three living. My boy is about six weeks."
This is all of the letter and it was found in Emerson Brown AWTRY's bible given to him by his father: James Hill AWTRY (son of Jacob and Isabella) and mother: Martha Cleveland REEVES in the year 1899. I would appreciate any help with this mystery letter writer. awtryp@yahoo.com thank you.

I'm looking for the family of Helen Clare McCARTHY who was born in Savannah, GA on Dec. 20 1869. According to her marriage record in Boston, MA her parents names were Michael D. McCARTHY and Catharine LEAVITT. I've located a Michael D. and Catharine McCARTHY in Savannah in the 1860 US Federal Census. I have also found birth records for their children at the Diocese of Savannah but no record of Helen. However there is a birth record for an Ellen McCARTHY on Dec. 22, 1866 which may be who I'm looking for but I'm not yet convinced. They also give Ellen's mother's maiden name as LOVETT, not LEAVITT. Michael and Catharine McCARTHY are buried in the Cathloic Cemetery in Savannah so they lived in the area between 1854 (birth of their first child, Dennis) through 1910 when Catharine died. I'm hoping someone has documented this family and can help me determine if it's the family I'm looking for.

I am searching for details/descendants of Abram (or Abraham) ARTLEY b 1852, Pennsylvania [Fishing Creek, Columbia County ??] married to Albaretta (maiden name unknown) b 1854, Pennsylvania - they married in 1875.
The children of this marriage were John B ARTLEY b 1881; Willian H ARTLEY b 1883;Mary K ARTLEY b 1885; (Fannie) Lois b 1890; Alla(e?)n b 1890; and Ruth M ARTLEY b 1895.
The 1910 US Federal census details indicate there were ten children born in this family but only seven living. Since there were only six children listed in the 1900 census, I assume the eldest was absent from the household the day the census was collected. I also assume that the three deceased children died in the period from 1875 until at least 1880. Abraham is listed as a contractor and Allen was a draftsman.

Samuel ANDERSON came to Wilkinson Co., GA in the mid 1840's met my great2 grandmother, married her 12/1845. They had two children. He came to Savannah in 1849 and put money in a bank for his daughter. Returned to Wilkinson Co.- either died or disappeared. I need to know what happened to the records and money that was in the banks in Savannah at the end of the Civil War. My great grandmother never came to get the money. I really want to find the bank records to assist me identifying Samuel's family and nationality. Does anyone know where I might find info on these banks?

George W. CLIFTON filed a claim with the Southern Commission in 1873. (Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia) Witnesses for this claim included his wife Sarah, and a J. W. BUTLER. There is also a George W. CLIFTON listed on the 1860 census for Bryan County. I would like to hear from anyone researching this family.

My mother (Mary Ellen ANDREWS (deceased 1970, lived and married out of my Grandmother (Julia BOYD)'s house. when she was seventeen (circa 1925). I had the original invitation to "Bismarck" Street, it is now lost. I believe the last name of the gentleman she married was ROBINSON.
Also, I woud very much like to place a head-stone on my grandmother's grave, but sadly can only remember her name, and that she passed in 1940 (later my mother returned from Philadelphia, Pa, and cared for her during her illness.
Blessings on you for whatever you might do to assist me.
I reside in Jacksonville, but our family church and cemetery is Bull Island Cemetery, on the Altamaha Road.

I am seeking information on Alexander J C SHAW who married Mary PUTNAM in 1825 Chatham County Savannah Georgia. She was the daughter of Margaret RATREY (actually AWTREY / AUTREY). Both of these ladies were widows. I have found their wills but unable to read the writing. I am trying to find Mary PUTNAM's first husband and the name of her mother's husband to link them in the AUTREY / AWTREY family lines. Any information would be appreciated. I know they drew in the land lottery in 1827 Mary PUTNAM from Baines District/Carroll County and her mother Margaret AUTREY / AWTREY drew in 1827 Bains District/Coweta County. Thank you.

Charles E. PFOERTNER committed suicide at a motel in Savannah on Sept. 28, 1950. It was a sensational case as described in the newspapers of that date. Does anyone have access to newspapers of the next day or two after the suicide? These may provide more details. I am interested in anything that would list his wife's name. He was "residing" in Fulton County - so perhaps the Atlanta newspapers would have an obituary? I think he moved to Fulton County between 1946 and 1950. Thanks for any help on this!
