I have records from the Northwest Georgia Historical & Genealogical Quarterly that lists a survery done in January 1983 by Raymond Floyd of the Trion Cemetery, Chattooga County, Ga. I'd be happy to do lookups from these records. You may list my email address as gloriasaunders@suddenlink.net My 3rd great grandmother Milly Jane Barnhill Howard migrated from Unitia, Loudon County, Tn. to Trion circa 1885 with some of her younger children after the death of her husband. Some of the older children stayed in Tennessee, while the younger ones stayed in Chattooga county, and many are buried in the Trion Cemetery. If you know of a photo of the cemetery, I'd be interested.  Gloria Tune Saunders

Would you be able to tell me how I could obtain copies of some obituary notices (which I learned about at Chattooga genweb site) that were published in the Summerville News that were published in the 1920's and 1930's? I tried calling the Chattooga County Library and was told someone would either call me or email me but this did not happen. If you could tell me the procedure and how much it would cost, I would appreciate it. Thanks you.  Donna Taber

I am in Monroe COunty, TN and looking for info on Tennessee A. Henry wife of James Henry. She was born in Monroe County but moved to Chattooga County, GA and died there 8-28-1928 - GA Death Cert. # 23399-J. I tried to email one of your volunteers, but the mail wouldn't go so I thought I would ask you and see if you knew anyone that would do a lookup for me... I would like to know where Tennessee is buried as well as her birthdate. I would love to have a copy of her Death Certificate emailed if at all possible. If you do not do this and you know someone that does, please let me know. This was Tennessee's second marriage. Her maiden name was Tennessee Lindsey and no one seems to know who her mother was - either Tildy Lindsey or Jane Tucker. She was previously married to Mr. Tate and was divorced to him by 1880. On the Monroe Co., TN census 1880 - she is living with my greatgrandfather Jackson Maynard and his wife Rachel Barnett Lindsey Maynard. Jackson's mother's name was Matilda and no record of her after 1850 Census - BUT, right beside Jackson Maynard, Tildy Lindsey is buried. So I think TIldy Linsey is Matilda Maynard. Im hoping going through Tennessee Lindsey Tate Henry will give me the answer. Tennessee is probably Jackson's half-sister. Thank you for anything that you can help me with....  Eddie Maynard

I am researching MILLICAN and CLEGHORN surnames in Chattooga County. My mother (deceased) was a MILLICAN. Her grandfather was Lewis Beman MILLICAN. I also am looking for a Chattooga County/Dirt Towm cemetery my mother once told me about where MILLICAN's are interred. Specifically, I am looking for one Elisha Franklin MILLICAN who died in camp at Centerville VA in 1861 and was returned to Chattooga County for burial by his brother, Lewis Beman MILLICAN. Both were with Company B, 9th Ga Inf Regiment. I have made several trips to the area believed to be the old Dirt Town (valley) to no avail. It seems a lot of the old cemeteries are on private property and difficult to access. Any information or leads would be greatly appreciated. I have other MILLICAN family information I can share. Hello! Sterling Johnson (b abt 1811 NC) married Emily S Greathouse in Troup Co., GA in 1837. The family lived in Chatooga Co during the 1840 and 1850 census. Emily died before the 1850 census. Sterling died about 1852 leaving 3 orphans: Abram b 1836, George b 1841 and Julius b 1843 all b in GA. There is a lot of information regarding the Greathouse family. Unfortunately I have not found any clues to Sterling's ancestors. There are court records regarding guardianship of the children and a record of a repayment of a loan from Sterling's estate to his brother Iredell Johnston (b abt 1811 NC) who lived in Macon Co., AL at that time. I have not seen any of these personally but received the information from distant cousins who were researching this family. I have been told the children lived temporarily with an Eliza Johnson. Daniel Hicks, possibly related to Amos or Aaron Hicks, was administrator of the estate, Thomas Glass and W R Thornton may have been appointed as guardians. By the 1860 census the boys are all living in Alabama. Abram is living with Zera Gentry an elderly widow and George is living with W R Thornton both in Beat 9, Russell Co., AL. Julius is living in Southern Division, Macon Co., AL with his Uncle Iredell's brother in law, a Hoffman. Are any of these Chatooga Co records on line? I'd appreciate any suggestions!  Debbi Johnston

Hello! I live in Florida but am coming up to Kennesaw to visit my daughter next week (June23-30, 2007) and would like to come over to Trion to stomp around in the Howell Cemetery. Does anyone out there know if this will be possible? Is the cemetery open? Is it accessible? Will I be able to find it from the road? I do not have GPS on my car. Anybody know any landmarks to help me find it? All help is appreciated! I am researching the Chattooga County Taylors. My ggggrandfather Jonathan James Taylor fought for the CSA in the 21st Georgia, Company K, Bartow's Avengers, a Chattooga County unit. (killed at Drewry's Bluff) His wife was Vinea Jane Howell. He had 4 children and I can account for 3 of them (Sarah Elizabeth (my gggrandmother), and twins James M and Mary (Molly.) Mary married Joseph Hall and died shortly after giving birth to one of her three children. Her daughter was Martha T Phillips' mother. Martha Taylor Phillips was a well-known character in Summerville until her recent death. She was my cousin. The 4th child of JJTaylor and Vinea Jane Howell Taylor was Bartow Taylor. He is my brick wall. I tracked him to 1880 when he was living with his grandma, Hannah Howell.. ALSO, the brother James M got run out of Chattooga County supposedly for killing a man. Anyone know anything about that story? He went to Louisiana where, as is befitting, he was also shot dead. They sent the body back to Chattooga. Martha Phillips sent me the bill of lading for the corpse. I'll be looking in the cemetery for any Howells and Taylors whose line I'm in. Much obliged for any help and direction here. Thanks for the quick response. I don't find many sites who respond as quickly and it is a good website. I came over there one weekend but, of course, everything was closed so I have been intending to come during the week. My father and Mr. Stephens met just after World War II and became good friends. They worked together for several years in Dalton and Bob came by our house each weekday morning to drink coffee before work, so we always considered him a "second uncle." He is in his 80's if still living...Again, thanks....  Larry Stone

I've been researching a family member for years. His name is Oliver Benjamin Karr. We called him OB Karr. The in the paperwork we've found his birth place doesn't seem consistent but one thing is for sure, most of the documents list Tryon, Ga as his birth. He was born January 21, 1887. The man was a musician by trade and travelled all over the US. I've not been able to find anything on him before his first marriage in Florida in 1914. Nothing in the census before 1920. His parents are listed as William Karr and wife Rachel Blakeley both of Georgia (later census' list b Alabama). Both of them never show up in any census from 1930 back to 1860, so I'm really stymied. Anyone having any clues please contact me. Thanks.  Chris

Hi, I'm searching for any info on the following families that lived in and around the Chattooga Co. area. First, I'm searching for any info on Sarah WHITTON(en) and her family, Sarah was found in the 1880 Chattooga Co. Census. She had the following children listed in her household. Beetie(Beadie-B.D.); Lee(Levi); George; Nellie(Melvina); and Beulah. Her other children not listed there with her were: Frances Amanda(Mandy); William H.(Bill); Susan and Mary. Most of her children were wed in Etowah Co., Al. with the exceptions of George, Susan and Mary. I do know that George and Levi Lee and their respective families ended up in Texas. I do believe her daughter, Susan, wed Millard BALLARD, and I am also looking for info on them as well. I'm glad for any help on these families. I would really love to know who Sarah was wed too and when she died. We have not found her listed with her spouse and this has been a puzzler in my family for many years. I do know that Sarah supposedly had consumption according to the 1880 census. I'm uncertain how long people lived with this back then, Also, I am interested in Newton and Simon Oliver, especially who their parents were and their siblings if known. Best of luck to all in their research. Thanks, Paula Mason  Paula Mason

Am searching for any information on the family of John D. Bailey. John was born ca. 1802, in S.C.   He evidently lived there until maybe early 1830's.  He had a son William A. Bailey that was born in 1824, and list S.C. as his birth state.  Probably in the early 1830's this family migrated into the area that became Chattooga county.  From information found on the buying and selling of property, and also the marriage of William A. Bailey to Melinda Whaley in Chattooga county, I expect this family lived here until late 1840's when they moved west. By early 1850's they are living in Conway county, Arkansas.  John D. dies in 1866, in the neighboring Van Buren county. I would really like to know more about this family while living in Georgia. PARTEN/PARTIN/PARTON

Have hit that BRICK WALL on my Parton Line. Nobody can help with maiden name of  Rosa B., widow of James R. Parton . Have listed info obtained on this line to date but can't seem to wiggle a single brick  from here. Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I am just about to the point of giving up (hit the brick wall effect). I have been trying to do this for my two grandchildren, so they will know where they came from and hopefully where they are going. All the Parton information that I have gathered can be seen here.
Thank you , Brenda E. (Parton) Glazier ElaynesPlace@aol.com

1840 and 1850 census of Chatooga Co. show family of William B. and Delila Coffey with children:
Richard who married Sarah Gratehouse
Elizabeth who married Joseph Warren Beddo
Thursa who married Joseph E. Sentle

Elizabeth who married the Beddo was a widow in 1850. What happened to her? Remarried? Died? Part of this family moved to Texas sometime after 1850, but left children and relatives in Georgia.
