ELIAS BATTEN FUNERAL MONDAY
Death claimed one of Coffee County's most prominent and respected citizens Saturday, when Elias Batten died at his home after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Batten was one of the oldest citizens of Coffee County having been born here and was the son of Samuel Batten & Malissia Metts. He was a resident of this section all his life. He was 87 years of age. The father of a large family Mr. Battens's sons and daughters are prominent in this section. His four sons are substantial farmers who make their homes near Douglas. The family is related to many of the older families of the section, Mrs. Batten being the former Rebecca Carver. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Mora church with the Rev. Henry Sears and the Rev. Hansel Sears officiating. Burial was in the Mora cemetery. Members of the immediate family include four daughters, Mrs. Christine Jowers, Hazlehurst, Mrs. Rhoda Brigman, Mrs. Dottie Graham and Mrs. Oliver Corbitt, Douglas; four sons, Henry, Benajah, Sammie, and Dennis Batten, of Douglas; and one brother, Jerry Batten of Pearson. 58 grandchildren and 86 great-grandchildren also survive. Serving as pallbearers were six of Mr. Batten's grandsons. Sims Funeral Home in charge.
