Ex-Sheriff J. C. Gillis, known over the county as "Uncle Jeams", died at his home 10 miles south of Douglas last Friday afternoon, and was buried at Mount Zion, the family burial grounds, on Saturday afternoon.
He was 62 years of age at the time of his death, which was due to heart trouble.
Mr. Gillis was the son of the late Angus Gillis, and married Miss Eliza Metts, daughter of Raiford Metts.
Besides a wife, several children survive him.
The deceased was sheriff of Coffee county 1910-12, and made a splendid record in that office.
He was surveyor of the county years ago, and it is said was one of the best surveyors the county ever had.
