Mrs. Leahman Thompson Burkhalter, 82, of Douglas, Ga., passed away Saturday, April 10, 2004, at home following an extended illness. Mrs. Burkhalter, a native of Tattnall County, Ga., was born March 14, 1922, the daughter of the late Willie Rufus and Edna Mae Purcell Thompson.She was a personnel director for the South Georgia College and Merchant's Specialty and a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include: her husband, Earl C. Burkhalter of Douglas, Ga.; one son, Dr. Bill Bennett of Cordele, Ga.; two daughters, Janet Haworth of Valdosta, Ga., and Judy Burkhalter of Atlanta, Ga.; twp grandchildren, Conrad Haworth of Valdosta, Ga., and Brice Bennett of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Mary Jo Thompson of Milledgeville, Ga., and Gladys Durrence of Glennville, Ga.; several nieces and nephews. Graveside services and burial were held Monday, April 12, 2004, at 2 p.m., at Glennville City Cemetery, Glennville, Ga., with Rev. John Smith officiating. Active pallbearers were Ben Dowdy, Dalton Dowdy, Marty Walker, Marvin Pettijohn, Bryce Bennett, and Conrad Haworth. Honorary pallbearers were Hugh Durrence and Jerry Dowdy. Sims Funeral Home of Douglas, Ga., was in charge of arrangements.
