Courthouse
The Clarke County Courthouse is located in downtown Athens, GA between
Washington street and Hancock Avenue in the block between Thomas and Jackson
Streets. Parking is available in a parking deck that adjoins the courthouse
and is entered from Hancock Avenue. In addition to the Washington Street
entrance, there is an entrance from the parking deck. At either entrance,
you must pass through a security gate, and anything that might be construed
as a weapon (including a pocketknife) must be checked with the guard and
recovered when you leave.
Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, except
for holidays. Call ahead if in doubt about holidays.

Court
Probate
Court has wills, estate administrations, minor guardianships, marriages,
oaths of office, and firearms licenses from the county's formation (1801)
to the present time. You can access their web site at www.athensclarkecounty.com/probatecourt/.
The staff does not do lookups, but if you know the location of the record
you want (book and page number) they will send you a copy for a fee. Send

Family History Center
The
Athens Family History Center is a branch of the Family History Library
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, located in Salt Lake
City, Utah and has a significant collection of print, microform, and CD
holdings of genealogical interest. In addition to the materials available
locally, patrons of the Family History Center can rent any of the millions
of rolls of microfilmed records available in the Family History Library
in Salt Lake City.

The Heritage
Room has a significant collection of print, microform, and CD holdings
for genealogical research in Clarke and other Northeast Georgia Counties.
The collection also includes materials for researchers interested in other
areas of Georgia, the Southeast, the United States, and other countries.

University
of Georgia Library
The University
of Georgia Main Library has several collections of interest to genealogists.
- The
Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, which includes
the Georgiana Collection, contains rare books and manuscripts plus an
extensive collection of history and record books for Georgia, its counties
and cities. For research in Georgia, this is a major source. Additional

- The
fourth floor shelf area houses an extensive collection of
books and periodicals of genealogical value for most states, plus a
large collection of published genealogies.
- The
microform collection in the basement of the Main Library
includes census records and early newspapers.
The census records include:
1). Microfilm of all extant Federal Census records for the Southern
and border states (coastal states from MD around to TX and as far north
as KY, MO, and WV).
2). Printed indices for the great majority of censuses for the above-listed
states from the earliest available through 1870. Soundex indices are
available on microfilm for 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920.
3). Some state censuses.
- Government
Documents are housed on the second floor of the Main Library
and includes many finding aids for the National Archives holdings.
- The
Reference Area, located on the ground floor of the Main Library,
houses several reference books of genealogical interest including printed
indices of many of the genealogies on file in the Library of Congress.
