Netherlands American Cemetery,
Margraten, The Netherlands

In May 2006, my husband and I returned to the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, Holland, to leave flowers at the grave of my grandfather, Calvin J. Moon, who was killed in action in World War II and is buried there.

I was surprised to find myself once again moved to tears by the beauty and peace of the cemetery.

There are 8301 graves at this cemetery, the 3rd largest overseas American military cemetery. There are 1723 more soldiers listed on the Tablets of the Missing there. There are 130 Georgia soldiers buried in this beautiful, peaceful cemetety along with 30 more Georgia solders listed on the Tablets of the Missing. On this trip, I took pictures of all of the crosses and names for those Georgia soldiers.

I took some of the cemetery pictures below but many of them were taken by a wonderful Dutch woman, Nicole Sproncken. She has adopted my grandfather's grave and I'm pleased to call her and her husband Leon friends.

Some of the pictures below were taken on May 27th, my last visit to the cemetery, when preparations were being made for the Memorial Day Service on May 28th. All the graves had an American flag and a Dutch flag. Many graves had flowers from the families that adopted the graves. It was amazing to see the Dutch people visiting the cemetery, despite the cold and rainy weather. The other pictures were taken by Nicole and her husband during the ceremony on the 28th.
