Notes:
John J. and
Elizabeth Kennedy arrived in present Douglas County from South Carolina in the late 1820s. The name was spelled Canady in some
early records. Their children who lived to adulthood included Polly Ann, 1821-1887, who
married Peter Leathers, 1816-1901, buried in the Leathers Cemetery, High Point Road;
Georgia E. who married James M. Alexander; and John J. who married Hester Ann Dorris. John
J. Kennedys children included Nancy who married J.J. Kirby and divorced; Mary who
married A.T. Brittain; Elizabeth who married Charles W. Winn and divorced; and Barbara who
married James Pilgrim. J.J. Kirby was the first mayor of Winston as its incorporation in
1906 and died in March 1932.
