Here's a chance for all Floyd County researchers to help out and honor your ancestors at the same time ---even from a distance! We started meeting about two years ago. We have been working on locating all cemeteries in Floyd County and assessing their condition. We have taken overall pictures of most of the cemeteries and their conditions. We are trying to locate people/groups that are willing to "adopt" a cemetery or sections of some of the larger ones to take care of. We are contacting Boy Scout Troops about" Adopting" a cemetery. (This would make a great Eagle Project or Community Service Project.) We are also contacting Churches and other organizations that do community services to "Adopt" a cemetery. We are following guidelines that Cobb County, Georgia started using several years ago with their committee. We will set down specific instructions on how to and how not to work in the cemetery. This is going to be a long process and it will be an uphill battle but we are determined. We are incorporated as a subsidiary of the Northwest Georgia Historical & Genealogical Society. If anyone would like to donate to help it can be sent to: Membership fees are $1.00 and covers such things as postage and copies, etc. That way no "one" person winds up paying for everything. We will gladly accept larger donations as we currently have about $125.00 in our treasury! As you can see we are very small scale at the moment but hope to grow in leaps and bound in the next two years. One of the largest abandoned cemeteries is Old Antioch Cemetery (also known as Hardtack) located on Callier Springs Road. There are several thousand people buried there. The cemetery is so overgrown that many people, who live in the area and pass it every day, do not even know the cemetery exists. Someone is building next to the cemetery and if the cemetery boundaries are not protected these tombstones and burial places will be lost forever. We are planning work days on the following Saturdays November 8, December 13 and Jan 10th. We will be starting about 8:30 and will work until we can't anymore that day. Our first goal will be to get the roads through the cemetery cleaned out so people can get into the cemetery. We would like to encourage anyone interested in helping clean the cemetery to please come help. This is a massive undertaking and will take many days and many hands to get it in order. If you can not help with the physical labor, please think about bringing water or snacks for the workers. Thank you,
Pat Millican
