  On April 26 William H. Ray submitted the verified census to the governor's office.*

  The act requiring the taking of a census failed to mention what remuneration
would be given to the ten census-takers of the Cherokee counties. In June of 1834,
Vaughan, who was then living in Cumming, wrote to the state capitol asking why he
would not or could not be paid for his service until the legislature met again.

  Since the enumerations of 1834 recorded exclusively the "free white" citizens
living in the counties, it is obvious that mixed bloods - those persons of Cherokee
Indian and free African descent - were excluded from the census. However, several
white men and women with Indian spouses and/or children were placed on the census
roll of Forsyth County by W.W.Vaughan. The totals for these households reflect only
the white male or female who claimed as head of the family. Those individuals known
from various recorded sources to have Cherokee connections are identified with and
asterisk (*) in the index that follows. The total count shown for each family includes
head of household.
