Hutson B. Hughes

Hutson (Hudson) B. Hughes was born in Franklin County, GA, May 18, 1829 as stated on his 1902 pension application. The 1904 pension application states he was born May, 1831 in Franklin County, GA. His wife was Amanda E. Unknown. They had the following children:

  1. James Russell (Dub) Hughes
  2. Harriett E. Hughes
  3. Franklin H. Hughes
  4. Edward Lee Hughes
  5. George Hughes
  6. Jessie Hughes

We suspect that the William Hughes living in Franklin County in 1830 (born in NC) was the father of Hutson Hughes. We think that possibly Franklin A. Hughes and Allen W. Hughes were also sons of William Hughes.

H. Hews first appears in the 1860 Catoosa County Georgia Census dated 19, June 1860 on Page 927, Line 5. He was living in Catoosa Springs and he listed his occupation as farming. He stated he was 33 years old with a wife and 3 children. Moved to Apison, James County, TN about 1884.

The War Department appears to have Hutson Hughes listed as B. H. Hughes, private, Company K, 43rd Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A. He enlisted December 8, 1862, at Ooltewah, TN, bounty due $50.00, captured and paroled at Vicksburg July 4-9, 1863, present at March 12, 1864 muster. Also captured at Bunker Hill, VA July 14, 1864, confined in Military Prison, Wheeling, VA (known as Atheneum Prison) July 20, 1864. Sent to Camp Chase, OH July 21, 1864 arriving the next day. Transferred to Point Lookout, MD February 12, 1865. "Deserted the Rebels" at Newbern, VA April 12, 1865. Signed Oath of Allegiance to US April 21, 1865 at Knoxville, TN. Sent to Chattanooga. Description in military records is: height 5'-7"; complexion-fair; eyes-grey; hair-light; occupation-farmer; residence-Catoosa County, GA.
