SERIES:: Marriage License Files, 1820-1905
SERIES: 3.
DESCRIPTION OF SERIES AND ITS CONTENTS:
This series contains two chief types of records.
The first is the marriage license proper which changed its format considerably
over this great span of years. Despite the changes, however, the informational
content has remained remarkably consistent. The first part consists
of the license to marry signed by the county ordinary or the clerk of
the inferior court and containing the names of the bride and groom and
the dates. The second part consists of a certification on the
part of the official who married the couple that the ceremony did indeed
take place. There is also another form called a Return of Marriage
(used only in 1875 and 1876 for statistics which were sent to the secretary
of a short lived State Board of Health) which contains physical descriptions
of the bride and groom, states of birth, age and other facts.
The records are arranged alphabetically by surname of the groom with
Negro records boxed in a separate alphabetical sequence. There
are no Negro records prior to the War Between the States. Bound volumes
partially duplicate this time span and are in Series.

The marriages
included in this listing were found on microfilm #0007119 obtained from
the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. These marriages were prepared
by Geri Lilley and checked by Jean Jones. At the beginning of the book
titled "Franklin County Marriages Dec 16, 1805 - Aug 7, 1826" is a statement
that it was copied in 1851, original through pages 124. While every
effort was made to accurately transcribe the entries, it is possible
that some have been incorrectly entered. It is highly recommended that
you consult the original records if any question exists. These marriages
are not offered as a source of documentation but rather for information
that you can use in your research.
Each marriage is listed twice. Once by the Grooms surname and once by
the Brides surname. Occasionally it seemed impossible to determine the
correct spelling of a name and it may be included with each believed
spelling thereby that marriage may be listed a third time.
