PO Box 541 Carnesville, GA 30521 Office is
located at 141 Athens Street, Carnesville, in basement under Franklin
County Commissioners office and is open Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9:30
to 2:30. Entrance to the society office is at rear of
building.
They
have the oldest courthouse books that have not been moved to the GA
Archives. Primarily they have the books for 1850-1900. They have the
books for the 1790-1850 period that were transcribed by the WPA but not
the originals. A copy of these same WPA books are at the Georgia
Archives. They indicated the original earliest books have been relocated
to the Georgia Archives in Morrow, Georgia. The Historical Society has
copies of the published books for Franklin County and many for those
counties that were formed from Franklin County. They do have family files
and books for some families who have remained in the county for many
years. They also have files on historic buildings, churches, cemeteries,
etc. Meetings are held bimonthly (January, March, May, July,
September, November) on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 2:00 p.m. at the
"Crow House" in Carnesville. This house is owned by the society and is
located directly behind the little Presbyterian Church. Copies of
"History of Franklin County, Georgia" is available and may be ordered from
Historical Society.

[Per
Barbara's opinion: For pre-1850 research you would probably be better
served by researching at the Georgia Archives.] |
