Glynn County, GAGenWeb welcomes you.

We are Richard and Kathleen Pettys, your hosts for your visit to Glynn County, GAGenWeb.

"Which Flag, Indeed"

The area that is now known as Glynn County started as a small buffer province between the English at Savannah and the Spanish in Florida.  But for some very unique circumstances and some very brave men who believed in causes greater than themselves, we could easily be flying the Spanish banner, the French flag or the Union Jack.

But we do not.  Because of men like James Edward Oglethorpe, Button Gwinnett, Lachlan McIntosh, Lyman Hall, George Walton, Peter Tondee and others, we are, today, flying the Stars and Stripes of the United States of America.

Glynn County is one of the original Georgia colonies, having been formed from the parishes of St. David, St. James and St. Patrick.  One of Georgia's eight original counties, it was formed in 1777.  It was named for John Glynn, a member of the English Parliament who was a friend to the Colonies.

Glynn County's earliest settlement was located on St. Simons Island in a town called Frederica.  Frederica was a military town that was manned by British troops culled mainly from the Scottish Blackwatch who were lured here by promises of land grants and money.  Many of the Scots settled in the nearby town of Darien.  Of course, Frederica had townspeople who came to settle the town.  Among their numbers were no lawyers and no "Papists".

A map of Frederica

Frederica was settled in 1738/9 (two years after the establishment of Savannah).  Frederica was truly a border town designed to create a buffer between the English of Savannah and the Spanish of St. Augustine.  Fort Frederica would become unnecessary after the Battle of Bloody Marsh, and the town was abandoned within five years of its founding.

In the coming weeks, we will upload further historical information and genealogical information.
