GAINEY CEMETERY South of Cairo. Take Hwy 111 south; turn left on Lower Hawthorne Trail. Go to Bob Dixon Ln., which is on the left side of the road, just before you reach Gainey Rd. Turn left on Bob Dixon Lane. It’s the first driveway on the right. Note: When I started out, I made a list of all the names found in the Hayes/ Varick Survey (dating from the 1970s). I thought, with such a list, it might simplify the work as it would allow me to take the cemetery, row by row, and just check off names and dates, thus saving a lot of writing. Well, it didn’t save a lot. I found so many errors on on that list that it was almost like starting from scratch --- and more omissions than you can believe. In a few cases, I could not find stones for names that were on the previous survey. I have included those names here as I feel that they must have existed once. I found a number of stones that were shattered into countless pieces (I suspect lightening may have hit them). I found one stone in this cemetery that appeared in perfect shape except that it had toppled to the ground with the inscribed side down. It was too heavy for me to lift so it had to go unread. I also found a new grave – so new that the earth hadn’t settled and the flowers were still not wilted. I found this on the same day I did this cemetery survey. It is from the Cairo Messenger and it reads: April 12, 1912, DIED- MISS SOPHIA LEE. Died –Last Monday evening at 3:30 o’clock, Miss Sophia Lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lee, was laid to rest in the Gainey cemetery. She leaves a father, mother, 6 brothers and 3 sisters and a host of friends to mourn her death. She was a very popular young lady and in the prime of life, but we feel that God has taken his own and we know that when He calls or takes some of our relatives or friends that we are at a great loss, but we hope that our loss will be her eternal gain. She was not a member of any church, but has always honored her father and mother and had kept all the other commandments that God had given her as far as any one knows, and we are taught that if we keep the ten commandments that God has given us, that when we pass out of this life that we will enter into a better kingdom that God has prepared for his angels, and we pray that God will look down upon the bereaved family and heal their wounded hearts. The Varick survey showed these names as Margret J. and Nancy Rebecca Hopkins Maxwell, however, the tombstone of Margret J., clearly showed the full name Margret Jane, while the one on Nancy Hopkins didn’t show either a middle name nor a middle initial. In the case of John Robert, the Varick survey showed only the initials of J.R. but his tombstone had the names John Robert, very clearly inscribed on it. Varick showed the initials of N. K. – I read it as N. W. ** The same survey mentioned above showed this name as Tonzil, but the name, which appeared both on headstone and slab was inscribed both places as Tomzil. It says Sophire Ann on the tombstone; the survey says Sophira Ann. The Varick survey also shows Rachael’s birthdate as 11 12 1869; the stone reads 11 24 1883.? ** Tombstone makers (or someone) must have found this name confusing. This name was on the Varick survey with the same identical birth and death dates except that Charles Shores’ death year was 1938 instead of 1939. I did not find anyone named Sasser buried in this cemetery. I retained the name Charlie Marvin Sasser simply because there were some stones that I could not read at all. One might have once shown the name Charlie Marvin Sasser. If so, it would surprise me greatly, though Sasser is a very common name in Grady County, GA. ** The name appears on the Varick survey but the birth and death dates were missing all but years.
