Obituary of John Avery - April 14, 1925 - November 17, 2001 (Cairo Messenger)
Mr. John Howard Avery, 76, of 3469 Collins Road, Whigham, GA, passed away November 17, 2001, at Grady General Hospital, Cairo, GA.
Mr. Avery was born April 14, 1925, in Decatur County, GA, to the late Eddie Avery and Edie Mae Norris Avery. He was married to Ruth Voncil Brock in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Gordon Heights Baptist Church, Cairo.
Services were held at Gordon Heights Baptist Church on Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, with the Rev. John Hasick officiating. Interment was followed at Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo.
Memorials may be made to Gordon Heights Baptist Church Building Fund.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-love, John and Pat Avery, Cairo, and Rabun and Charcia Avery, and Richard and Leslie Avery, and Ronnie Avery, all of Whigham; a daughter and son-in-love, Diane and Earl Pilcher, Woodstock, GA; sisters, Laverne Wilson, Climax, GA, and Roma Cumbie, Pelham, GA; a brother, Rufus Avery, Ponchatoula, LA; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Avery was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Edie Mae Norris Avery; a sister, Thelma Cook; and a grandson, Howard Avery.
Heritage Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
