- Lowndes
County, Georgia, Probate Records
Recorded
July Term 1847-January Term
1852
by Charles
R. Corbett
Hardbound,
285 pages, with a full name index. This volume contains a
complete transcription of the records in a court register
entitled the Surviving Docket, so named because it
is the only register of probate records for Lowndes
County prior to 1869 which was not destroyed by fire. The
records are currently housed in the Office of the Clerk
of the Court of Ordinary at the Lowndes County Courthouse
in Valdosta, Georgia. The Surviving Docket
consists primarily of estate inventories, sales, returns,
guardianship papers, or distributions to heirs which were
recorded at the courthouse from July 1847 through January
1852. While most of the documents are contemporary to
that time period, some of the returns date back to estate
settlements in the 1820s. These records provide direct
evidence of family relationships and marriages for many
of the early pioneers in this area, including farmers,
planters, and slave families. All names and dates are in
bold print. A one to one relationship has been maintained
between the pages of the original document and their
transcription so as to facilitate an easy comparison back
to the original documents if one should desire to do so.
Price includes postage and handling. Florida residents
please add 7% sales tax.
