I am seeking information on the PAYNE family. My great-grandfather
William F. Payne was born in Gwinnett Co. in 1861. I have been
unable to locate the names of his parents. On his marriage certificate
there is an H.L. Payne serving as bond. I know that H.L. Payne
enlisted in the Confederate Army in Gwinnett Co. in 1861. He
served until 1865. H.L. Payne received a pension for his service
and indicates that he has resided in Gwinnett Co. since approximately
1888. I am assuming that he perhaps moved out of state after
the war. He married a Leetie Rogers that I believe was also from
Gwinnett Co. I do not know of any children. I am pursuing information
on H.L. Payne because he is my only link with William Franklin
Payne.

My Great grandfather, Ervin Green Jackson, lived in Gwinnett
County for most of his life. He was b. 25 May 1875 and d. 9 March
1945. He is the son of Albert and Elizabeth Jackson. He married
first Hattie (?), and second, my great grandmother Pearl Minerva
Dutton Bennett. There were 2 children by Hattie; Harvey T., and
Martin Allen, and 9 children by my great grandmother; Dollie
Mae, Robert Lee, Era, Walter, Mamie, Annie B., Wilfred, Homer,
& Logan. Ervin G. Jackson is known to have had 3 jobs. the
first occupation was farmer. The second was a railroad worker,
and his 3rd job was as a prison guard. I have a poem that was
written as a memorial to him by one of the prisoners. It mentions
the "Old River Camp". I am interested in any information
on this family, but especially any information I can find on
the "Old River Camp" prison. I believe that this prison
camp was probably in Gwinnett County or very nearby since that
is where my great grandfather lived. I also wondered if "Old
River Camp" was the name of the prison or just a nickname
for it. I also would like to know its location. Because of the
name, I am inclined to believe that there may have been a River
nearby. I would appreciate any information that anyone can give
me. If you have anything on this family, or on the prison camp,
please e-mail me at admarsh@paradise.net.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

From: GenSurfer@aol.com I am looking for information on the CRUMLEY
family of Gwinnett Co., GA. My maternal grandfather, William
Fletcher CRUMLEY was born in Flowery Branch, Gwinnett Co., GA,
on 11 June 1889. He married Inez DODD in 1904. They had four
sons: (1) Horace, (2) Sewell, (3) Hoy, and (4) Howard, between
1906 & 1912, while living in Gwinnett Co. I remember my grandfather
telling me that he worked at the horse collar factory in Buford
and also took care of the municipal horses. I believe his father's
name was Sam or perhaps William Samuel CRUMLEY. His mother was
Mary Alyce WILLIAMS. He had about 14 brothers and sisters - among
whom were Sally, Beulah and the youngest of which was Clyde,
born in 1899. Anyone with information on this family please contact

I am looking for anyone else researching this family. It appears
that Lewis Burrel came to Gwinnett before 1820. His Father, Dr.
John, was a French Physician who came over with Lafayette and
fought in the Rev. War. It appears from his widow's pension application
that he was present when Corwallis surrendered to Washington.
The main families in Gwinnett were Lewis, John, and William.
I have them on my home page http://www.tgn.net/~dbaker/

Seems like I'm kin to half of Gwinnett Co., and know the other
half! My Pittards, who came from Caswell Co., NC to Oglethorpe,
then Clarke Co., then Gwinnett) are from around Lilburn, and
the rest of them in the county are kin, too. I am also kin to
the COLE, LANDERS and CORLEY families in Gwinnett Co. I hope
to get my over 8,000 person database (a good portion of whom
are from Gwinnett) up on the web at some point, but until then
will answer questions on names as soon as I can. And if you are
kin to any of these names, I would especially like to hear from
you and exchange information.

I have quite a lot of research on a Marandy/Mirandy Clinton Malone
(md. Nancy Drummond, 1833 in Gwinnett Co., Ga.-license obtained
in Walton Co., Ga.) who lived in Reid's District until the late
1850's. Family lore is M.C. Malone raced horses, and he and a
group of other Gwinnett Co., Ga. families (Hills, Reids, Bridges
families) moved to Clarke Co., Ga. One son married a Hill, one
daughter a Hill, and one daughter a Reid in Gwinnett Co., Ga.
1850's. I have estate returns, etc. on this family. I was told
by a Reid descendant that they (families listed above) traveled
by wagon train with one wagon loaded with gold, but met on hard
times in Arkansas, and had to spend most of money just to eke
out a daily existence. Have done a lot of research on the Reid
family, which intermarried with Gastons...and some minor research
on the Hills, which had Walton Co., Ga. ties. I have seen forms
of Marandy Clinton Malones name in a Gwinette Co., Ga. family
of Nathan Clarke/Clark (Malone Clinton Clark and Maude Marandy
Clark) Searching for any ties with a Clark family. Marandy also
seen in Gwinnett Co., Ga. record with a Nathan Harris, William
Whorton/Whorten, who married Dolly Sansom in 1813 Jasper Co.,
Ga.(a sister of Marandy's mother). Searching for any family members
of the above to exchange info with.

Hello from France,
Could you perhaps have a quick look on
your records of Gwinnett County to see if you have anything on
early Hewat(t)'s - the spelling is unusual, and they are today
concentrated in Ga/SC.
One of them wrote me:
I have a ggg grandfather named Alexander Hewatt (1797-1857).
He came to Georgia from South Carolina around 1825. This is as
far back as I have any information. This information came from
"The History of Gwinnett County, Georgia" by Marvin
Nash Worthy.
My own gggg grandfather, Andrew Hewatt
was a loyalist planter in South Carolina. (His name was apparently
spelled with 2 t's, though his family used only one). He was
a Loyalist, and was expelled in 1777, but had married into a
patriot family. His wife Katherine Brisbane Elliott apparently
died during the war, and their baby son Alexander Hewatt disappeared,
perhaps raised by the Brisbane or Elliot (Patriot) families.
I would like to learn more about Alexander
Hewatt (1797-1857), who may be the son of my gggg grandfather's
baby, Alexander Hewatt.
Further information about my SC/Ga ancestors
is on:

Researching family of John WINN lived in Gwinnett Co., GA in
1850. b. ca 1816 in SC, came to GA as a young boy with his family.
He married Mahala Moore, dau of James Walker Moore and Nancy
(BROWN?]. They had: Joseph S. b.1838, Nancy A. b. 1842, John
V. b.1844, Eliza J. b.1846/7 and Zachariah Taylor WINN b. 10
Oct 1849. All b. Gwinnett Co., and they lived Harbin's Dist.
This family lived close to the Thomas
WYNNE & Mary Prince BENSON family, and Thomas & Mary
had a son born in SC who came to GA with his parents at about
age 8 and he was born about 1816. Problem is, this John WINN
supposedly married an Alice Bobo and she outlived him. Thomas
WYNNE'S children, some of them, spelled their names WINN. My
John WINN went to Hamilton Co., TN where I believe he must have
died by 1860.
Mahala went to Fremont, Neb. with son
Zachariah and was there in the 1870 census. She came back and
went to Hall Co., GA and lived with son Joseph & family.
She died in an institution in 1903 and was buried in the Pauper
Cem. in Auburn. Her brother was Dr. Russell B. MOORE I have searched
alot of WINN/WYNNE families in this area, and will search my
files for anyone researching. This family has been elusive for
a long time and I'm so glad I found this website! Thank you,

My GGF James J. Moore was born 1827-8, In GA, according to the

came from the Carolinas. He and Martha Rice Moore named their

Subject: Captain John N. REEVES, Gwinnett Co. GA Militia
Hello Bill,
I have been to your page a couple of
times and cannot remember if I sent you a message. I cannot identify
the Captain John N. REEVES but I have been looking for the father
of my Thompson REEVES, b. 1799-1800 who had brothers: Loftin
REEVES, Burgess REEVES, and Frederick REEVES. Burgess and Frederick
REEVES served in the War of 1812 from the Jackson Co. GA Militia.
These guys were in the section of Jackson Co. that was cut off
into Gwinnett Co. GA in 1818. They are also listed in the 1820
Census of Gwinnett Co. GA. Loftin REEVES raised his family in
Walton Co., GA. By 1870 Loftin REEVES is in Barfield, Clay Co.
Alabama, near my ancestor and his brother Thompson REEVES. Frederick
REEVES bible records listed their father as John REEVES who m.
Sarah ______ thought by our Reeves Family to have been a THOMPSON.
Reeves family lore says that John REEVES was called "Jack"
and was killed by Indians, probably sometime between 1810 and
1816. There are numerous John REEVES in the area. I believe one
was his son named John REEVES by first marriage. Members of this
REEVES family fought in the Creek Indian War of 1836 from Alabama.
Thompson REEVES we think lived near the village of Roanoke AL
which was burned and pillaged by a bunch of Creek renegades which
alarmed the GA, AL, and TN State Militia's and the Jackson Administration.
I believe this Captain John N. REEVES from Gwinnett Co., GA is
connected to this family. If you have any idea's or places for
me to look for information about this Creek War of 1836 or the
first Creek War of 1814 I would appreciate you passing it on
to me. I believe the older John REEVES was killed or died of
wounds as a result of one of the battles in the war with the
Creeks in 1814. I have found a record of a John RIVES who was
awarded land in the area of Alabama that was set aside for veterans
of these Indian wars. The date is 1831 which indicates to me
he was involved in the earlier war. Perhaps this land grant was
given to his heirs. It was located on the Alabama side of the
Chatachoochee River in the bend just below Columbus GA. If you
can help in anyway please let me know.

I am trying to find my great-great grandfather's parents. His
name is James A. Brumbelow and he had two older brothers Archibald
and Jackson Y. Brumbelow. According to a book written by Temple,
A Short History of Cobb County, First Hundred Years of Cobb County,
Jackson and James moved from Gwinnett county to Cobb county where
they are considered pioneer families. The 1880 Cobb County Census
has them living in the Lost Mountain District. Archibald moved
to Arkansas before moving to Jack County, Texas. He shows up
in the 1860 census in Jackboro, Texas in Jack County. I cannot
find a parent's name on anything from any of the three brothers.
Jackson Y. Brumbelow was born 1816 in Tenn. James A. Brumbelow
born 1-12-1818 where? and died 4-7-1876 buried in Methodist Cemetery
on the Old Austell Road in Powder Springs, GA. I would appreciate
any information you could provide or lead me to. Thank you.
