Copeland, Howard L.
Funeral services for Howard L. Copeland, 77, of Rex were held at 11 a.m.,
Monday, July 1, at Hazel Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Billy Burrell and the
Rev. Trent Smith officiated with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Copeland
died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Southern Regional Hospital in Riverdale following
an extended illness. Born in Fox Hill, Va., on Dec. 17, 1924, he was the son of
the late Howard L. Copeland Sr. and Mattie Spencer Copeland. He was preceded in
death by his wife, Virginia Wright Copeland; and brother-in-law, Amos Wright. He
was retired from the U.S. Air Force where he served in the Korean Conflict and
World War II. He was a member of Mt. Zion Church in Douglasville. Survivors
include his daughter and son-in-law, Ginger and Ross Bryant of Rex; son, Ed
Copeland of Kennesaw; brother, Carl Copeland of Yorktown, Va.; sisters, Bertha
Sears, Molly Holloway, Harriett Carter, all of Fox Hill, Va.; brothers- in-law,
Lawrence and Carvin Wright of Alto, Vermon Wright of Cornelia; sisters-in-law,
Floyce Mallory, Lucille Rudeseal, both of Cornelia, Reba Lee Barry of Milton,

Trotter, Robert Lee
Funeral services for Robert Lee Trotter, 82, of Clarkesville were held at 3
p.m., Monday, July 1, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral
Home. The Rev. Richard Horn officiated with burial in Victory Baptist Church
Cemetery. Mr. Trotter died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at a private nursing home
facility following an extended illness. Born in White County on Jan. 10, 1920,
he was the son of the late Willie and Mollie Edwards Trotter. He was retired
from Habersham Electric Membership Corporation. Mr. Trotter was a U.S. Army
veteran having served in World War II, where he was a prisoner of war in
Germany. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife,
Mildred Kinsey Trotter of Clarkesville; daughter, Lynn Walters of Clarkesville;
son, Robert Lee Trotter Jr. of Clarkesville; sisters, Zella Wilson, Ethel
Westmoreland, both of Sautee, Essie Parrott of Gastonia, N.C., Ellene Shook of

Sellers, Dora Pitts
Funeral services for Dora Pitts Sellers, 78, of Cornelia will be held at 11
a.m., today, July 2, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. The Rev. Billy
Harris will officiate with burial in Welcome Home Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs.
Sellers died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at Newton General Hospital in Covington
following an extended illness. Born in Wilkes County on April 16, 1924, she was
a daughter of the late Arthur and Zona Whitworth Pitts. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Paul Sellers; and daughter, Penny Sellers. She was a
homemaker and was formerly employed in the suture department of Chicopee
Manufacturing Company. She was a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Sarah Langston, Mary Gibson, both of Cornelia,
Ruth Bowen of Seneca, S.C., Martha Addison of Homer, Gail Baird of Winder; sons,
Ray Sellers, Larry Sellers, both of Cornelia; brothers, Clyde A. Pitts of
Daytona Beach, Fla., Eugene Pitts of Indiana; 10 grandchildren; and five

McClesky, E. O. Dr. Mac
Graveside services for E. O. Dr. Mac McCleskey, 99, of Clarkesville,
formerly of Atlanta, were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, June 30, at Crestlawn Memorial
Park. The Rev. Lendell Ainsworth officiated. Dr. McCleskey died Friday, June 28,
2002. A retired pharmacist, Dr. McCleskey owned and operated the Hemphill Ave.
Pharmacy from 1925 to 1980. He was a 50-year member of the Georgia
Pharmaceutical Association Honor Club, a 50-year member of the John Rosier
Masonic Lodge and received a Certificate of Award from Mercer University for
outstanding service in the field of pharmacy for 55 years. He was preceded in
death by wives, Grace Light McCleskey and Cleva P. McCleskey. Survivors include
his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Dan Knight of Clarkesville; son and
daughter-in-law, Gayle and Marianna McCleskey of Alpharetta; seven
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Memorials may

Norton, Melvin
Funeral services for Melvin Norton, 73, of Mt. Airy will be held at 3 p.m.,
today, July 2, in the chapel of McGahee- Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home. The
Rev. Luther Williams, the Rev. Billy Burrell and the Rev. Warren T. Wilkinson
will officiate, with burial in Camp Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Norton
died Sunday, June 30, 2002 at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta following a brief
illness. Born in Stephens County on Jan. 23, 1929, he was the son of the late
Lawrence and Hassie Eller Norton. He retired after 21 years as a master
craftsman with Standard Telephone. Mr. Norton was a member of Soil and Water
Conservation Service and a member of Camp Creek Baptist Church. Survivors
include his wife, Stella Burrell Norton of Mt. Airy; sons and daughters-in-law,
David and Marsha Norton of Mt. Airy, Douglas and Sue Norton of Birmingham, Ala.;
sisters, Dot Reed of Oakwood, Mildred Norton of Royston; and grandchildren,

Estes, Jamie
Funeral arrangements for Jamie Estes, 48, of Cleveland are incomplete at
this time. Mrs. Estes died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at home after a long battle

Weathers, William Lester
Funeral services for William Lester Williams, 97, of Demorest were held at
10 a.m. Saturday, July 6, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral
Home. The Rev. Tim McIntosh officiated with burial in Yonah Memorial Gardens
with full Masonic graveside services provided by the Cornelia Masonic Lodge No.
92 F&AM. Mr. Weathers died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at a personal care
facility following an extended illness. Born in Daisy on Oct. 29, 1904, he was
the son of the late Marvin Lester and Beulah Elizabeth Brady Weathers. He was
the owner of Weathers Appliances and Furniture, and Log Cabin Sewing Machine
Repair. He was a member of Harvest Christian Church and a 50-year member of the
Cornelia Masonic Lodge No. 92 F&AM. He was the Past High Priest of the
Clarkesville Royal Arch Chapter. Mr. Weathers was also a member of the Phielmon
Commandry, the Yaarab Shrine Temple and the Mountaineer Shrine Club. He served
as Worthy Patron of the Clarkesville Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
He was a member of Habersham AARP Chapter No. 2040 and organized the
Clarkesville AARP chapter in 1979, where he served as president for three years.
He was a former member of the Cornelia Kiwanis Club. He published his
autobiography, which is located in the state archives and the Piedmont College
Library. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mamie Bazemore, to whom he
was married for 39 years; second wife, Dorothy Garrison, to whom he was married
for 32 years; and daughter, Mildred Carver. Survivors include his daughters,
Betty Clair Harvey of Columbus, Cheryl Smart of San Jose, Calif.; sisters,
Allene Remley, Bertie Mae Patterson, both of Longwood, Fla.; eight
grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Wade, Mary Louise Crawford
Funeral services for Mary Louise Crawford Wade, 86, of Alto, were held at 2
p.m. Saturday, July 6, at Timberidge Baptist Church. The Rev. Dean Bryant and
Mike Robertson officiated with burial in the church cemetery. Mrs. Wade died
Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a short
illness. Born in Hall County on Feb. 26, 1916, she was the daughter of the late
Garnett and Pearl Eberhart McMillan. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Dupree Crawford Sr.; and brothers, Jimmy McMillan, Ralph McMillan, Clyde
McMillan. Mrs. Wade was a homemaker and a member of Timberidge Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Betty Woodall of Murrayville, Martha Pearl

Sims, Jeff
Funeral services for Jeff Sims, 41, of Clarkesville were held at 2 p.m.
Monday, July 8, at Hillside Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Furman Lewis officiated
with burial in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Sims died Friday, July 5,
2002, at Habersham County Medical Center. Born in Habersham County on Feb. 7,
1961, he was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church. Mr. Sims was a carpenter. He
was preceded in death by his mother, Bronez Parker Sims; grandparents, True and
Mary Lou Parker, Hamp and Lucy Sims. Survivors include his father, Boyd Sims of
Clarkesville; daughters, Jennifer Sims Burdette of Toccoa, Melissa Sims of

Meaders, Martha Duncan
Funeral services for Martha Duncan Meaders, 57, of Alto will be held at 2
p.m. today, July 9, at Living Mission United Methodist Church. The Rev. Edwin
Smith, the Rev. James Duncan and the Rev. Woodrow Hix will officiate with burial
in the church cemetery. Mrs. Meaders died Saturday, July 6, 2002, from injuries
sustained in an automobile accident. Born in Hall County on July 15, 1944, she
was once a member of the Duncan Sisters and was employed by Ethicon. She was a
member of Living Mission United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by
her father, Paul Herman Duncan; and sister, Erie Wade. Survivors include her
mother, Dolly Saxon Duncan of Lula; daughter, Melissa Chapman of Cleveland; son,
Craig Meaders of Alto; sisters, Jeanette Crocker of Lula, Carol Wade of Alto;

Evans, Claude
Funeral services for Claude Evans, 72, of Mt. Airy were held at 2 p.m.
Sunday, July 7, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home with
Ron Cope and Martin Davis officiating. Burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens with
full military honors provided by Rabun County Disabled American Veterans Chapter
No. 15. Mr. Evans died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at Northeast Georgia Medical
Center following an extended illness. Born in Habersham County on June 9, 1930,
he was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean Conflict. He was retired
from Mt. Vernon Mills and was a member of Cornelia Church of Christ. He was
preceded in death by his daughter, Olivia Stamey; son, Claude Evans Jr.;
brothers, Bill Evans, Clifford Evans; and sister, Evelyn Evans. Survivors
include his wife, Eleanor Fitzgerald Evans of Mt. Airy; sons, Alan Stamey of
Myrtle Beach, S.C., Richard Wallace of Marietta, S.C.; sisters, Maggie Evans,

Shockley, J.D.
Funeral services for J.D. Shockley, 86, of Baldwin were held at 2 p.m.
Sunday, July 7, at Leatherwood Baptist Church. The Rev. James Morgan and the
Rev. James Harvey officiated with burial in the church cemetery. Mr. Shockley
died Friday, July 5, 2002, at St. Josephs Hospital in Atlanta. Born in Hall
County on Dec. 7, 1915, he was a son of the late Thomas Sr. and Jessie Osborne
Shockley. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Cathryn Pritchett Shockley.
Mr. Shockley was retired as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service and
owned and operated Shockleys Store for 35 years. He was a member of
Hollingsworth Lodge No. 355 F&AM, and was a member of Mountain View Baptist
Church. Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Alawayne and Edwin
Booth, Sandra and Clifton Ward, all of Baldwin; sister, Lois Christopher of

Williams, Homer Lee
Funeral services for Homer Lee Williams, 74, of Central, S.C., formerly of
the Batesville community, will be held at 11 a.m. today, July 9, at Camp Creek
Baptist Church near Central, S.C. The casket will be placed in Macedonia Baptist
Church on New Liberty Road, Clarkesville, to lie in state from 3-4 p.m. today.
The family will receive friends during this time. Graveside services will be at
4 p.m. today, July 9, in the family lot in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.
The Rev. Raymond Payne will officiate. Mr. Williams died Sunday, July 7, 2002,
at Anderson Area Medical Center following several months of declining health.
Born in Habersham County, he was a son of the late Charles Jefferson and
Clarissa Free Williams. He was a retired U.S. Navy veteran, where he served as a
Chief Petty Officer; a retiree of the U.S. Postal Service; and a former contract
employee of the Department of Navy. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve
Association, Branch 234 in Anderson, S.C., and a member of Camp Creek Baptist
Church, Central, S.C. Survivors include his wife, Ellen Hill Dyer Williams of
Central, S.C.; sons, David Williams of San Diego, Calif., Joseph Lee Williams,

Cemetery. Mrs. Free died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Athens Regional Medical Center
following an extended illness. Born in Stephens County on Dec. 25, 1942, she was
a daughter of the late Narvey and Myrtle Pressley Watkins. She lived most of her
life in Habersham County and was a homemaker and a member of Hollywood Baptist
Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Gene Roach; and
brothers, Harold, Tommy and Joel Watkins. Survivors include her husband, Eddie
Free of Clarkesville; daughter, Jeannie Barrett of Eastanollee; sons, Danny

Green, Max Jefferson
Funeral services for Max Jefferson Green, 85, of Cornelia were held at 11
a.m. Saturday, July 6, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel. Dr. Mark Weaver
and Dr. T. Logan Smith officiated with burial at 2 p.m. in Alta Vista Cemetery,
Gainesville. Mr. Green died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at a private nursing home
following an extended illness. Born in Jackson County on July 31, 1916, he was
the son of the late William Edgar and Beulah Peeler Green. He was preceded in
death by his grandsons, Jeff Green and Kevin Green. Mr. Green attended high
school in Pacolet, S.C., and Commerce. He majored in textile engineering at
Clemson University and taught textile math and manufacturing at Gainesville
Mills while working as Quality Control technician, Personnel and Safety
director, office manager, assistant secretary and treasurer. He joined Chicopee
Lumite Division in 1946 with the following jobs: office manager and purchasing
agent for Buford and Cornelia, manager of shade fabrics and national sales
manager. Mr. Green was owner and operator of Farm Supply Company of Cornelia for
11 years. He retired in 1976 to spend more time enjoying his favorite hobby,
golf. He played regularly for 63 years and retired from playing at the age of 82
due to health problems. Mr. Green was a member of the Kiwanis Club and was
Scoutmaster of the Kiwanis Club Troop. He was a member and chairman of the Youth
Committee Chamber of Commerce and was the county Heart Fund Drive chairman. Mr.
Green was a Mason and Shriner, and a member of Cornelia Lodge No. 92 F&AM.
He joined Cornelia First Baptist Church in 1947. There he served as Sunday
School teacher and director. He was also the Brotherhood president, trustee and
Board of Deacons chairman and was a Training Union director at the church.
Survivors include his wife, Claudine Dink Lenderman Green of Cornelia;
daughters, Sandra Elrod of Marietta, Nancy Chandler of Cornelia; son, Randall
Bud Green of Lula; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Whitfield

Haynes, Gordon Jr.
Funeral services for Gordon Haynes Jr., 71, of Cornelia will be held at 2
p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Level Grove Baptist Church. The Rev. Terry Rice will
officiate with burial in Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Haynes died
Sunday, July 7, 2002, at his residence following a sudden illness. Born in Hall
County on Dec. 8, 1930, he was a U.S. Army veteran, having served at the Panama
Canal during the Korean Conflict. He had been in used car sales in Cornelia
since 1947 and owned Haynes-Gailey Pontiac since 1971. Mr. Haynes was a member
of Harmony Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Elrod
Haynes; father, Gordon Lee Haynes Sr.; and brother, James Hulsey Wise. Survivors
include his mother, Myrtle Wise of Baldwin; daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda
Haynes Hughes and Pete Hughes of Mt. Airy; sons and daughters-in-law, Buddy and
Jan Haynes, Robin and Donna Haynes, all of Cornelia; fiance, Jerri Bell of
Toccoa, and her children, Elizabeth Bell Lee, Thomas Bell; brothers, John

McLean, Lillian Alice
Memorial services for Lillian Alice McLean, 23 days, of Tucker will be held

Medical Center. Born in DeKalb County on July 5, 2002, she was the infant

Clarkesville Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Gribble died Friday, July 26, at his
residence following an extended illness. Born in Habersham County on June 23,
1926, he was the son of the late James B. and Winnie Lee Hill Gribble. He was
preceded in death by his sister, Lurline Holbrook. Mr. Gribble was a retired
manager with Ridge Lumber Company in Lakeland, Fla. He was a U.S. Navy veteran
serving in World War II. He attended Cornelia Church of God and was a member of
North Side Assembly of God in Lakeland, Fla., where he served as deacon for many
years. Survivors include his wife, Alma O’Steen Gribble of Clarkesville;
daughters, Winnie Higgins of Comer, Donna Coleman of Charlotte, N.C.; son, James
Gribble of Auburndale, Fla.; brother, James M. Gribble of Clarkesville; sisters,

death by his daughter, Patricia Pauline Gailey; one grandchild; and one
great-grandchild. Mr. Mauldin served in the National Guard and was retired from
Schnadig Corporation with 30 years of service. He was a member of New Birth
Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Survivors include his wife,
Mayzelle Aycock Mauldin of Baldwin; daughters, Mary Jane Gailey and Linda Gailey,
both of Baldwin; son, James Ray Mauldin of Baldwin; brothers, Raymond Mauldin of
Cornelia, Jack Mauldin of Washington, Herman Mauldin of Rayle; 11 grandchildren;
and 10 great-grandchildren. Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, was
in charge of arrangements.
Wade, Grady
Funeral services for Grady Wade, 79, of Demorest will be held at 11 a.m.
today, July 30, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel. The Rev. Donald Grizzle
will officiate with burial in Return Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Wade died
Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Banks-Jackson County Medical Center following an
extended illness. Born in Banks County on April 8, 1923, he was a son of the
late Cleveland and Margie Crenshaw Wade. He was preceded in death by his wife,
Pauline Smith Wade; sister, Grace Lynch Plott; and brothers, Paul Wade,
Roosevelt Wade. Mr. Wade was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and a member of
Return Baptist Church. He was retired from Clarkesville Mill with 37 years of
service. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Richard Jones
of Demorest; son and daughter-in-law, Verner and Joyce Wade of Demorest;
grandchildren, Kris Jones, Kim Jones, both of Demorest; sisters, Sophronia
Petitt of Cleveland, Charlotte Freeman and Joyce Turner, both of Demorest; and
brothers, Richard Wade and Dewey Wade, both of Demorest, Buford Wade of
Cleveland. Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, is in charge of
arrangements.
