The October 9, 2006 meeting of the Haralson County Historical Society was called to order by President Karen Higgins, who was on speaker phone. The following ten people were present: John Norton Mary Jarrell Helen Higgins Jana Gentry Jeri Ezell Peggy Kimball Terrell McBrayer Stephanie Jarrell Clovis Momon Ron Feigenblatt The minutes from the September 11, 2006 meeting were read and accepted as corrected. The correction was that the grant John Norton had applied for from the West Georgia Foundation was for $16,200.00, not for $17,000.00. Jana gave the Treasurer's report: Our balance, with several deposits ready to go into the bank, was $10,017.42. We discussed the debit card that we voted on last month, and the fact that the bank will only issue a debit card to one person. After some deliberation there was a motion and second, with a unanimous vote, that Karen Higgins, who is the president of the Historical Society and who's name is already on the bank account, should have her name put on a debit card with a $500.00 limit, to make purchases on behalf of the Historical Society. Because of recent vandalism we have decided to put deadbolts on all necessary doors to secure the upstairs. During events we will give guided and supervised tours only. Wade House: Terrell tells us they have raised $7,960.00 in cash with another $3,600.00 in pledges. They want to bring in enough of those pledges to put down a $10,000.00 cash payment. They are expecting to receive the $50,000.00 in grant money any day, and will be closing as soon as possible afterwards. We discussed the Speaker Bureau of the Georgia Historical Society and which speaker we would like to invite to lecture here. We decided on Stan Deaton-"Now More Than Ever: Why History Still Matters." Maybe in February or March he will be available. We have a new website thanks to Ron. It looks great and anyone who hasn't checked it out needs to go to it and see how wonderful it is. Karen has been asked to join the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce. Stephanie has been asked to chair the Historic Preservation Committee for Buchanan. Membership: once again we are discussing what we can do about it. We have to do something to get more members in. Mission Statement: Ours is outdated. We all need to sit down and think about what our new Mission Statement should say. What are our goals? What is our purpose? What do we want to be known for? Etc. We will discuss this again next month. We discussed plans for the Pumpkin Caper. Still trying to find out who will cover the costume contest. We will have story telling, games, trick-or-treating, lots of food and drinks. Plans for the Festival of Trees : Santa at 11:00, Greg will take pictures, BES chorus, possibly the Cricket chorus, Michelle's School of Dance, give away hot drinks, have a bake sale. Possibly have a monetary prize for "Peoples Choice" winner? Need to get more organizations involved, get more trees entered. Karen's co-worker's church is selling their folding chairs for $2.00 each. The motion was made and seconded with a unanimous vote to purchase 20 of them. Karen spoke with Kim Fitzgerald (the Community Voice with WLBB). She said once we have all the details on the Pumpkin Caper and The Festival of Trees to call her and she will have Karen on her program. The University of West Georgia is sponsoring an Economic Forecast Breakfast for the "United States, State of Georgia, and West Georgia Region" on Thursday, November 9, 2006 from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. The motion was made and seconded with a unanimous vote to send in the paperwork to reserve a table to share with the Friends of the Library and split the cost with them. Roy Black is re-modeling the vault. He comes in often before anyone else gets here and stays after everyone else is gone. The motion was made and seconded, with a unanimous vote, to give him the key pad combination # so he can let himself in. The Georgia Humanities Council is looking for community organizations (including museums, libraries and historical societies) to host "Key Ingredients: America By Food" when it circulates to Georgia during 2008-2009. We are going to find out whether we would qualify to host this exhibit. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned. Minutes by Secretary Jeri Ezell.
